Canopy cleaning in Woodlands

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers canopy light fittings, wall canopies and baffle filters, and common reasons people get in touch are wet, greasy drips from the hood and filters that never seem to stay clean.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • The size of the system
  • The condition of the system
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

What we need to know

What to send for a quote:

  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Any previous report or certificate

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

What happens on the day

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Woodlands and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Advice

For landlords and multi-site operators

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

Questions from Woodlands

Which fire service covers Woodlands?

Woodlands is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Woodlands in the summer holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Woodlands. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Where does the waste go?

We take it away at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.

What should I send you?

A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

What’s TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

It takes a few hours for most canopies. Your quote will give a time.

How much does canopy cleaning cost in Woodlands?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Call for a fixed quote and we will normally reply within one working day.

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

Few pubs and hotels can shut the kitchen for a day. Canopy cleans are done late at night or early in the morning so the kitchen keeps trading.

Island canopies

The underside of an island canopy is in full view, so the finish matters. We degrease it thoroughly and photograph the result.

What we’re called out for in Woodlands

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

The symptoms we’re asked about most are:

  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • A hood coated in old grease

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Sevenoaks Hospital about 3.3 miles south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Whether a written report and pictures are included

Our hiring checklist

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that is cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. We keep it to what matters.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Canopy cleaning around Woodlands

Kitchens in Woodlands get their food hygiene inspections from Sevenoaks council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. At about 19 miles from central London, Woodlands sits well inside the area we cover. Visits are booked around your hours, evenings and weekends included.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Lullingstone Castle is about 3.2 miles north-west), access may need planning. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of Saint Mary the Virgin or elsewhere in Woodlands, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Woodlands is about 4 miles north-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. Across the TN15 area, we can carry out canopy cleaning at your premises. Across Kent, we cover 922 places, and Woodlands is one of them. You can also see our page for Maidstone, about 13 miles away.

Why it’s worth doing now in Woodlands

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. A planned visit to Woodlands is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.
