Canopy cleaning near Knatts Valley

Canopy cleaning in Knatts Valley

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have heavy deposits behind the grease filters and filters that clog soon after cleaning, we can put it right.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Leave it or put it right?

For a kitchen in Knatts Valley, a canopy that looks greasy can colour a whole inspection. A clean hood is a sign the kitchen is cared for, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. If the system at a site near Knatts Valley fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Filter housings hold the filters in place, and their channels fill with grease. We clean them so the filters sit tight and leave no gaps.

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

Grease, kitchens and Knatts Valley

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 4 restaurants, cafés and works canteens in and around Knatts Valley, up to about a mile and a half out. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Kitchens in Knatts Valley get their food hygiene inspections from Sevenoaks council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Knatts Valley is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as West Kingsdown CofE VC Primary School or anywhere near Knatts Valley, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of Saint Mary the Virgin or elsewhere in Knatts Valley, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Knatts Valley is about 4 miles north-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. Across the TN15 area, we cover canopy cleaning for commercial sites. Across Kent, we cover 922 places, and Knatts Valley is one of them. We also work in Maidstone, around 13 miles away.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Knatts Valley

A canopy in Knatts Valley picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Knatts Valley (Lullingstone Castle is about 2.8 miles north-west), fitting access panels needs care.

Questions to ask before you book

How we price canopy cleaning

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The times the site is available
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The size of the system
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Helping us quote

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any previous report or certificate

Want a quote for canopy cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site. We will talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.

What happens on the day

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Knatts Valley before we set off.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Common questions in Knatts Valley

Do you work at weekends in Knatts Valley?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. Your customers, staff or residents in Knatts Valley needn’t be disturbed. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Knatts Valley?

Kitchens in Knatts Valley are inspected by Sevenoaks council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

You get a photo report with before and after photos. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Are the filters cleaned too?

Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.

How much notice do you need?

For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
