Common problems we fix in Puddledock

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Chartwell is about 0.6 miles north-west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

Before you book anyone

  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Whether a written report and pictures are included

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Puddledock

A kitchen team can wipe the outside of a canopy, but the seams, gutters and inner skin need more. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. The work covers grease gutters, wall canopies and baffle filters, and people most often call us about greasy streaks across the canopy and a filter housing caked in grease.

In a London area like Puddledock, a kitchen extract often passes through shared space on its way out: a riser, a service void, the floors above. A duct fire there can reach parts of the building far from the range, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What a clean won’t put right

We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.

Between visits

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in Puddledock is no exception.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Advice

Puddledock questions

Is parking a problem for work in Puddledock?

Tell us where a van can stop near your site in Puddledock, and about any building rules on loading. Working overnight, as we often do in London, normally makes it simpler.

Which environmental health team covers Puddledock?

Kitchens in Puddledock are inspected by Sevenoaks council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

TR19® Grease is about the whole extract, from canopy to discharge. Cleaning the canopy alone leaves the ducts, risers and fan untouched, and the report will say what was covered.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. The area we’re working in has to be out of use while we’re there, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

What happens to the filters during the clean?

The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, and they’re cleaned before going back in. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Puddledock kitchens: local notes

It’s Sevenoaks council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Puddledock. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Puddledock is covered by London Fire Brigade. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Tandridge Priory is the nearest hospital to Puddledock, about 3 miles west. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Holy Trinity Church, or anywhere in Puddledock, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

How the job changes from site to site

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.

Grease troughs and gutters

Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.
