FAQs for Littlemore
Which fire authority looks after Littlemore?
Littlemore is in the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Littlemore?
In Littlemore, it’s Oxford City council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Where does the waste go?
We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Typically not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.
How long does canopy cleaning take?
A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. You will know before we start.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.
Canopy cleaning in Littlemore, done properly
Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is usually in a worse state. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it does not. The work covers plenum chambers, canopy light fittings and island canopies, and the jobs we see most are condensation and grease dripping together and greasy streaks across the canopy.
Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like Littlemore gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Looking after it afterwards
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Before and after photos speak for themselves.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
How we price canopy cleaning
You’ll get a fixed price before work begins. It’s based on:
- The size of the system
- The times the site is available
- Travel, parking and unloading
- The condition of the system
We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will talk you through it.
What to send for a quote
To help us quote quickly, send us:
- Problems your staff have spotted
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The site address and the type of premises
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
What we’re called out for in Littlemore
A canopy in Littlemore picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- Grease channels that no longer drain
If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Holywell Manor is about 2.7 miles north), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.
What your quote should include
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether VAT is included

Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Littlemore. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Mary and St Nicholas or anywhere around Littlemore, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Littlemore Hospital is the nearest hospital to Littlemore, about within half a mile south.

What happens if it’s left?
Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. A planned visit to Littlemore fits your hours; an emergency does not.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Honest limits
In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)

How the visit works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Around Littlemore, access is usually simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.
- We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us where we can park and unload

Advice
Multi-site and managed buildings
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
