Canopy cleaning in Iffley, done properly
The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers wall canopies, grease gutters and plenum chambers, and the jobs we see most are wet, greasy drips from the hood and a sticky, discoloured canopy.
For a smaller kitchen near Iffley, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site
Wall canopies
A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. We work along the canopy section by section, with photos for each.
Island canopies
The underside of an island canopy is in full view so a clean, even finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.

Common questions in Iffley
Which fire authority looks after Iffley?
Iffley is in the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Can you get to a site in Iffley?
Yes. Iffley is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
How long does canopy cleaning take?
Size and build-up decide it. Typically it takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.
Who is the responsible person?
The law calls them the responsible person. That’s generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
How much notice should we give?
For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
Why does grease run off the canopy edge?
A canopy only holds so much grease. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.
Iffley kitchens: local notes
There are about 97 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 30 takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Iffley, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. In Iffley, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Oxford City council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Iffley. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St James or anywhere around Iffley, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Rose Hill Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- Parking and loading at the site
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins.
What we need to know
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- The postcode and the type of business
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We typically come back within one working day.
When to call us in Iffley
Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Poor capture at the hood
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
A hospital like NHS Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, about 0.9 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
What your quote should include
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- If they look at the system before pricing
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. A site near Iffley normally has room to park, so the questions are about access to the system and your hours.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Before we arrive
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
Getting a quote
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What staff can safely do
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
What a clean will not put right
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
- A light fitting that doesn’t work
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.
