Firle: your questions answered
Which fire authority looks after Firle?
Firle is in the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Who inspects food businesses in Firle?
That’s Lewes council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Firle. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
What’s TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?
The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, then clean and refit them. We will tell you if any need replacing.
How long is a canopy clean?
Allow a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before we start.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. It also gives a recommended date for the next clean.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We are fully insured, and the details are available on request.
Canopy cleaning in Firle, done properly
Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. If you are dealing with greasy streaks across the canopy and wet, greasy drips from the hood, we can help.
In a village or hamlet like Firle, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How we price canopy cleaning
Your quote is based on your site. We consider:
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- How big the system is
- The condition we find in the survey
- The number of sites or systems
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
What we need to know
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Your last certificate, test record or report
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Looking after it afterwards
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Firle
Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- An EHO comment about the canopy
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near The Parish Church of St Peter, or anywhere in Firle, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- If they look at the system before pricing
- Whether a written report and photos are included
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
Multi-site and managed buildings
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.

Other services in Firle
Leave it or put it right?
In Firle, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. A fault that closes a site in a village like Firle affects everyone who depends on it.
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

How the visit works
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Firle.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Move anything stored near the system
