How we handle canopy cleaning in Uckfield
For canopies and hoods in Uckfield, the work follows the same careful routine: we remove the filters, clean the plenum and housing, then degrease the canopy shell. Before and after photos go into your report. If you’re dealing with fat running down the front of the hood and a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away, we can help.
In a town like Uckfield, most of the kitchen extracts we’re asked about belong to restaurants, cafés, pubs, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Each has a canopy, filters, ductwork and a fan to keep clear of grease.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

When to call us in Uckfield
A canopy in Uckfield picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
- Condensation and grease dripping together
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Uckfield Community Hospital (about less than half a mile south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether they’re fully insured
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

How the job changes from site to site
Plenums and filter housings
Filter housings hold the filters in place, and their channels fill with grease. We clean them so the filters sit tight and leave no gaps.
School and staff canteen kitchens
Canteens and school kitchens tend to run to a timetable, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. Holidays and weekends work well.
Questions from Uckfield
Which fire service covers Uckfield?
Fire safety enforcement in Uckfield is handled by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Which council inspects kitchens in Uckfield?
In Uckfield, it’s Wealden council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply call 0345 646 2711 or email us.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We will tell you what to expect.
How do you protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
Does a canopy clean meet TR19?
TR19® Grease is about the whole extract, from canopy to discharge. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.
What accreditations do you have?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
The process
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. We arrive in Uckfield once you’ve closed and leave the site ready for the morning.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
How to prepare
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Move anything stored near the system
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Advice
What a clean won’t put right
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- A light fitting that doesn’t work
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:
- What state the system is in
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Travel, parking and unloading
- The size of the system
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
What to send for a quote
A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- The postcode and the type of business
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
Uckfield kitchens: local notes
The Food Standards Agency lists about 5 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses across Uckfield and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Environmental health officers from Wealden council inspect food businesses in Uckfield. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Fire safety in Uckfield falls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as St Philip's Catholic Primary School or anywhere near Uckfield, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Where a hall near St Saviour, or anywhere in Uckfield, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Aftercare tips
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
