How we handle canopy cleaning in Findon

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, grease gutters and baffle filters, and common reasons people get in touch are a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and filters that clog soon after cleaning.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a few hours for most canopies, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Findon run smoothly.

  1. The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Getting a quote

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Findon?

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Findon (Ecclesden Manor is about 3.8 miles south-west), fitting access panels needs care.

Questions from Findon

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Findon?

Findon is in the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Which environmental health team covers Findon?

Food hygiene inspections in Findon are carried out by Arun council. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Is Findon in your area?

Yes. We work in Findon and the rest of West Sussex, as part of our work across South East England and London. To book, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

How much does canopy cleaning cost in Findon?

We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before work begins.

What accreditations do you have?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. The area we are working in has to be out of use while we are there, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Findon

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Findon

Food Standards Agency records include about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Findon. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. The fire and rescue service for Findon is West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Food hygiene inspections in Findon are the job of Arun council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Findon is Worthing Hospital, about 3.9 miles south-east. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near The Parish Church of St John the Baptist or elsewhere in Findon, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Honest limits

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Plenum chambers
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Before and after photos speak for themselves.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
