Canopy cleaning across Chelsea

Canopy cleaning in Chelsea

Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is usually in a worse state. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it does not. The work covers island canopies, wall canopies and plenum chambers, and people most often call us about an EHO comment about the canopy and a hood coated in old grease.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Chelsea, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after every visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

The process

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Getting kit into a London building takes planning, so let us know where we can load and park in Chelsea.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

Advice

FAQs for Chelsea

Which council inspects kitchens in Chelsea?

Kitchens in Chelsea are inspected by Kensington and Chelsea council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

How do you handle parking and loading in Chelsea?

Parking and loading in London need planning, so tell us about bays, permits and building rules when you book. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit typically gets round them.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Canopies in pubs, restaurants, hotels, schools, care homes, offices and other kitchens. Whatever is cooked under it, the canopy is cleaned the same thorough way, with the equipment off and cool.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

One lightly soiled hood does not take long, while long canopies, several hoods or heavy deposits take more time. You’ll know before we start.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean the canopy, plenum and troughs and tell you what we find.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We’re fully insured, and the details are available on request.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Kitchen extracts in Chelsea

The FSA’s data shows about 122 pubs, bars and clubs and about 111 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Chelsea. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading isn’t affected. The fire and rescue service for Chelsea is London Fire Brigade. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Carlyle's House is about 0.4 miles south-west), access may need planning. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Royal Brompton Hospital (about less than half a mile west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

When to call us in Chelsea

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Former Welsh Congregational Church or elsewhere in Chelsea, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • Proof of insurance
  • When the next visit should be, and why

Our hiring checklist

What the work involves, part by part

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

Why act early in Chelsea

Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder. A booked night’s work in Chelsea costs you no trading time; an unplanned closure does.

Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

What a clean won’t put right

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Aftercare tips

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
