Canopy cleaning in Canada, done properly
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. Typical jobs include a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and filters that never seem to stay clean, on canopy light fittings, grease gutters and baffle filters.
For a kitchen in or near Canada, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Keeping the system healthy
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Canada
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
When to call us in Canada
Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- Grease channels that no longer drain
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Wellow School or anywhere near Canada, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.
What to look for in a quote
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
How it works
Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Visits to a village like Canada are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Have your last certificate or report to hand

Advice
Why act early in Canada
Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. It’s simpler to plan the work at Canada now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.
Why book with us
- A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
- Photo reports with every job
- Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001
- Survey first, then a fixed quote
How the job changes from site to site
School and staff canteen kitchens
Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.
Plenums and filter housings
The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Kitchen extracts in Canada
The Food Standards Agency lists about 3 pubs and bars as registered food businesses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Canada. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Canada. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Kitchens in Canada get their food hygiene inspections from Test Valley council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Tatchbury Mount Hospital (about 3.5 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Landford Manor, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses near Canada; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.
Canada is about 5 miles north-west of Totton, in Hampshire. Sites in Canada get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where necessary and a written report with photos. Canada is one of 683 towns, villages and districts in Hampshire where we work for canopy cleaning. Southampton is in our area too, about 9 miles from Canada.
Here we cover the SO51 postcode area for canopy cleaning. We also cover the places around Canada: West Wellow (1 mile north), Blackhill (1 mile east), East Wellow (1 mile east), Newbridge (2 miles south) and Plaitford Green (2 miles north). We also work in nearby towns such as Winchester (14 miles north-east), Eastleigh (11 miles east), Totton (5 miles south-east), Chandler's Ford (9 miles east), Hedge End (13 miles east) and Lymington (14 miles south).

In Canada, that means kitchens and buildings near Rockingham Arms. For rail, the closest station is Romsey station, about 4.6 miles north-east of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Tatchbury Mount Hospital (3.5 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Copythorne Common.
Questions from Canada
Which fire authority looks after Canada?
Fire safety enforcement in Canada is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Can you work in Canada outside opening hours?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
How far ahead should we book?
For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?
Wall canopies, island canopies and single hoods over individual appliances. Each one is cleaned inside and out, with the plenum behind the filters.
What do you do to protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
Do you work in Canada?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Canada.
What happens to the filters during the clean?
We remove the filters to reach the plenum, then clean and refit them. We will tell you if any need replacing.
