Canopy cleaning in East Wellow, done properly
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers canopy light fittings, plenum chambers and island canopies, and common reasons people get in touch are condensation and grease dripping together and a filter housing caked in grease.
In a small place like East Wellow, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with pictures after every visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Why deal with it now?
If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

What the work involves, part by part
Grease troughs and gutters
Where a trough drains into a grease cup, we empty and clean that as well, and we’ll show staff where it is.
Plenums and filter housings
Filter housings hold the filters in place, and their channels fill with grease. We clean them so the filters sit tight and leave no gaps.
Do you need canopy cleaning in East Wellow?
Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- Grease channels that no longer drain
- Poor capture at the hood
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Landford Manor is about 2.8 miles west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.
What to look for in a quote

- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Kitchen extracts in East Wellow
Look up East Wellow on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 5 restaurants, cafés and canteens in East Wellow and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. East Wellow is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Food hygiene inspections in East Wellow are the job of Test Valley council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Wellow School or anywhere near East Wellow, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Margaret or anywhere around East Wellow, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What staff can safely do
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Between visits
Once we have finished, these simple steps help:
- Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
- Keep the fan on through service
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Keep every filter in place while cooking
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.
Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
When it’s something else
Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
- Bent or broken filters
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Questions from East Wellow
Can you come to East Wellow after we close?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in East Wellow can fit around your hours. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
Which fire service covers East Wellow?
Fire safety enforcement in East Wellow is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need and the fixed quote is built on it.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Ask us for a fixed quote and we’ll typically reply within one working day.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
How the visit works
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near East Wellow, let us know and we will plan around it.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
Before we arrive
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
