About our fire damper testing in Canada
We’re often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Canada. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we will plan the testing around when the building is in use. We’re often asked to deal with buildings with no damper register and dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment, across offices and schools, fusible link fire dampers and wall and floor dampers.
Somewhere as small as Canada, fire dampers are usually found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

How the visit works
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate, and we clear up before we go. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Canada.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
How to prepare
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Have your last certificate or report to hand

Your questions about fire damper testing in Canada
Which fire service covers Canada?
That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.
Can you get to a site in Canada?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Canada included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
Can testing be done without disrupting the building?
Yes, we plan around how the building is used. Out-of-hours and weekend work is available if daytime testing would get in the way.
Do you certify fire dampers?
You get a test report recording every damper we tested, showing where it is, whether it passed and what we found. It belongs in your fire safety log.
How do you deal with dampers that cannot be reached?
We record it as not tested and explain why. Access panels can be installed so it’s tested on the next visit.
What information do you need?
Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
Who is responsible for fire damper testing?
It sits with the building’s responsible person. Depending on the building, that can be the employer, owner, landlord or whoever manages it. We carry out the testing and give them the records.
Different parts, different methods
Fusible link fire dampers
Spring-operated fire dampers need testing at least once a year. A weak spring or a sticking blade shows up when the damper is dropped.
Smoke dampers
Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. Testing means operating them from the controls and check each blade travels fully.
What affects the cost of fire damper testing
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- The condition of the system
- A single visit or a regular plan
- Any permits to work or inductions
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
What to send for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will usually have a quote within one working day.
Looking after it afterwards
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
Share the results with your fire risk assessor so their assessment matches what was found. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
Make sure every damper can be reached. If a damper has no access panel, have one fitted ahead of the next visit.
What we’re called out for in Canada
Other trades work around dampers all the time. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Damper actions from a fire risk assessment
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms
Historic buildings that have had ventilation added later can hide dampers in awkward places; Landford Manor, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the area around Canada.
Before you book anyone
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- If they look at the system before pricing
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
- Whether the figure could change on the day
Why deal with it now?
When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. A damper test log helps show the responsible person kept on top of things, and you can only produce records for tests that took place. In a place like Canada, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
