Need TR19 inspection in The City?

Keeping the system healthy

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals
  • Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
  • Diary the next grease test and clean
  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge

Each report suggests the next clean and the next test, based on the readings and how the kitchen is used.

Fit access panels where the survey finds sections cannot be reached, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.

How we handle TR19 inspection in The City

After a clean, post-clean verification checks the result, with fresh grease readings, pictures and a look at the areas that were cleaned. It gives you evidence of how the system was actually left. Typical jobs include post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean and surveys needed before quoting a full clean, across deposit thickness tests, wet film thickness tests and insurer audits.

Work in a small place like The City starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

The process

Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Visits to a village like The City are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.

  1. The visit is arranged for when the kitchen is not busy.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease readings are taken at set points using WFTT or DTT.
  4. Photos are taken at each point, and access gaps noted.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, photos and next steps.

How to prepare

Advice

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Risers can be hard to get into. We record what can and can’t be reached.

Extract fan and discharge

The extract fan and its housing collect grease too. We check and test them as part of the inspection.

Questions from The City

Who is the fire and rescue service for The City?

Fire safety enforcement in The City is handled by Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Do you work in villages like The City?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and The City is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you verify a clean after it’s been done?

A post-clean check records grease readings and photos after the work, for our cleans and other firms’ alike.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Can you quote from pictures?

Yes, for many jobs. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and a fixed quote usually follows within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we’ll say so.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

What do you do with what you remove?

We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.

Leave it or put it right?

Without readings, you’re guessing when to clean. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning under TR19® Grease, and you can only act on that if you’ve measured it. A fault that closes a site in a village like The City affects everyone who depends on it.

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet
  • A faulty or failing extract fan
  • Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Grease, kitchens and The City

There are about 4 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens across The City and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Food hygiene inspections in The City are the job of Buckinghamshire council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service covers The City. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Paul or elsewhere in The City, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Radnage Church of England Primary School or anywhere near The City, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Do you need TR19 inspection in The City?

Grease builds up as cooking vapour cools inside the extract. The thickest layers can sit out of sight in the plenum, at bends and along flat runs.

Clients normally contact us when they notice one of these:

  • Systems that need surveying before cleaning
  • Systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements
  • Insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning
  • Parts of the system left out of past cleans

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Wycombe Hospital (about 5 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

What to look for in a quote

  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
