What fire damper testing can’t fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
  • Approving the building’s fire strategy

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Riser dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in The City

Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. If you’re dealing with buildings with no damper register and fire damper items raised by an assessor, we can put it right.

For a building in or near The City, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with pictures, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Why act early in The City

After any fire, one of the first questions is what maintenance had been done. A damper test log helps show the responsible person kept on top of things, and they only exist if the testing happened. A fault that closes a site in a village like The City affects everyone who depends on it.

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What we do, step by step

We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to The City.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

How to get a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Then phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Advice

What fire damper testing looks like in The City

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service covers The City. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up. About 35 miles out from central London, The City is part of the South East area we work across. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you.

West Wycombe Park House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses near The City, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later. For schools like Radnage Church of England Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear. Healthcare buildings such as Wycombe Hospital (about 5 miles south-east) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

The City is about 5 miles north-west of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire. The City gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. The City is one of 263 towns, villages and districts in Buckinghamshire we cover for fire damper testing. For sites nearby, see our Reading page (15 miles or so).

All of HP14 is within our area for fire damper testing, from the main roads to the quietest streets. We cover sites on Bottle Square Lane, Radnage Common Road and Green Lane and nearby roads. Nearby, we also carry out fire damper testing in Waterend (1 mile west), Beacon's Bottom (1 mile south-west), Radnage (1 mile north), Bennett End (1 mile north-west) and Green End (1 mile south-east). Larger places within reach include Aylesbury (11 miles north), High Wycombe (5 miles south-east), Chesham (11 miles east), Marlow (7 miles south-east), Amersham (11 miles east) and Beaconsfield (10 miles east).

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to The Crown pub. The nearest railway station is Saunderton station, roughly 1.8 miles north-east. A little further out are Wycombe Hospital (5 miles south-east). The countryside around The City includes Yoesden and Bald Hill.

Between visits

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:

  • Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
  • Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
  • Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly

Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.

The simplest way to avoid failures is to test on time, every year. A blade that’s just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.

Part by part

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Where residents cannot easily get out, holding fire and smoke back matters even more. Regular damper testing supports that.

Smoke dampers

If a smoke damper won’t operate when signalled, it goes on the report as a failure, with a note of what we found.

FAQs for The City

Do you cover smaller places like The City?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for The City?

That is Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.

Do you test dampers in the evening or at weekends?

Yes. We can test in the evening, overnight or at the weekend, which suits offices, retail and schools. Hospitals and care homes are planned with the site team.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

How much time does a damper test visit need?

As a guide, it takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. It comes down mainly to how many dampers there are and how easy they are to get to.

Can you fix fire dampers that fail?

The failure goes on the report, along with what caused it, such as a sticking blade, corrosion or a damaged link. We offer remedials to repair or replace it, and test it again afterwards.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in The City and across Buckinghamshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.
