TR19 inspection in Patching, done properly
A pre-clean survey is the diagnosis, and the clean is the treatment. Readings, pictures and notes on access are gathered from end to end, so the quote and the clean fit the real system. Common call-outs are for pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean and insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning, on access surveys, deposit thickness tests and insurer audits.
In a village or hamlet like Patching, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

What affects the quote in Patching
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The times the site is available
- The condition we find in the survey
- The size of the system
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.
What to send for a quote
Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Send what you can of the following:
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
Want a quote for TR19 inspection? Please call 0345 646 2711 or email us with a few details about the site. We’ll explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
What TR19 inspection can’t fix
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
- The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
- Design faults in the extract system
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Different parts, different methods
Canopy and plenum
Behind the filters, the plenum catches plenty of grease. Readings and pictures are taken in the plenum on every inspection.
Vertical risers
Access to risers is often limited. We record what can and cannot be reached.
Signs you need TR19 inspection in Patching
As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Parts of the system left out of past cleans
- Extracts that have never been grease tested
- Missing TR19 certificates or history
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Zachary Merton Hospital (about 3.4 miles south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.
What your quote should include
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- What insurance they carry
- If they look at the system before pricing
- How VAT is shown on the quote

What TR19 inspection looks like in Patching
There are about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Patching, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Patching sits within the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. It’s Arun council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Patching. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near The Parish Church of St John the Divine or elsewhere in Patching, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Clapham and Patching CofE Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Multi-site and managed buildings
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
The process
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Patching run smoothly.
- The visit is arranged for when the kitchen isn’t busy.
- We look over the canopy, plenum, ducts, fan and discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
- Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
- You get a report with readings, pictures and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
How to get a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.
