TR19 inspection near Hammersmith

How we handle TR19 inspection in Hammersmith

Think of a TR19 inspection as the diagnosis before the treatment. Readings, photos and notes on access are gathered from end to end, so the clean can be planned properly. Common call-outs are for kitchens whose menu or hours have changed and missing TR19 certificates or history, on wet film thickness tests, deposit thickness tests and post-clean checks.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. For a kitchen in Hammersmith, that normally means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.

We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Common problems we fix in Hammersmith

Grease in a duct is flammable fuel. A flare-up on the range can be drawn into the canopy and duct, and from there a fire can spread through the ductwork. Measuring it is the first step to keeping it under control.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
  • Systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements
  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Parts of the system left out of past cleans

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; West London Hospital is the nearest hospital to Hammersmith, about within half a mile south-east.

Questions to ask before you book

What happens if it’s left?

Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Ignored, the layer only gets thicker. In Hammersmith, a planned overnight visit is much easier than closing unexpectedly.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

The process

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. If your building in Hammersmith has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.

  1. Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
  2. We open the access points used on the clean.
  3. We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
  4. We photograph each area to record how it was left.
  5. The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.

How to prepare

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Ask for a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Extract fan and discharge

Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. We check and test them as part of the inspection.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Heavy use under BESA guidance, 12 to 16 hours a day, means a clean at least every 3 months, and readings show whether that is enough.

Hammersmith kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s data shows about 126 pubs, bars and clubs and about 64 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses registered within about 1.5 miles of central Hammersmith. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Corona Theatre School or anywhere near Hammersmith, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. For kitchens close to Kensington Olympia station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

How we price TR19 inspection

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • A single visit or a regular plan

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • A few general shots of the system
  • The site address and the type of premises

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We usually come back within one working day.

Hammersmith: your questions answered

Which environmental health team covers Hammersmith?

Kitchens in Hammersmith are inspected by Hammersmith and Fulham council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Who is the fire and rescue service for Hammersmith?

Fire safety enforcement in Hammersmith is handled by London Fire Brigade. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.

Is a quote from photos possible?

Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.

Do you check other contractors’ cleans?

We visit after a clean, take readings at set points and photograph the system. The report flags anything missed.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Diary the next grease test and clean
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change

Each report suggests the next clean and the next test, based on the readings and how the kitchen is used.

Keep filters clean and in place. Missing or damaged filters let grease straight into the plenum.
