About our TR19 inspection in Esher
BESA’s minimum cleaning frequencies depend on how long the kitchen cooks each day: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. We are often asked to deal with insurers asking for TR19 evidence and systems that need surveying before cleaning, across insurer audits, pre-clean surveys and deposit thickness tests.
For a smaller kitchen near Esher, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly
- Mention new equipment or longer hours at the next test
- Diary the next grease test and clean
- Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
The audit report is set out to pass straight to your insurer or broker, with readings, pictures and any areas not accessible.
Revisit the cleaning interval whenever the menu or hours change. A quick grease test answers the question.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Honest limits
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
- A faulty or failing extract fan
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What happens on the day
We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. Evenings, weekends or a closed day all work for a site in a place like Esher.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- The same access points are opened up.
- Grease readings are taken again at set points.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
How to get a quote
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Why deal with it now?
If there’s a fire or a claim, your insurer may ask for TR19 records. Missing records can put a claim at risk. Getting an inspection done now starts that paper trail. A quieter site near Esher still needs its system looked after.
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.
What you get with us

What TR19 inspection looks like in Esher
Food Standards Agency records include about 21 pubs, bars and clubs across Esher and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Esher sits within the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in Esher get their food hygiene inspections from Elmbridge council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St George's Church or elsewhere in Esher, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Milbourne Lodge School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Do you need TR19 inspection in Esher?
Grease is fuel. A flare-up on the range can be drawn into the canopy and duct, and from there a fire can spread through the ductwork. Measuring it is the first step to keeping it under control.
Look out for any of the following:
- Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
- Checking the result of a recent clean
- Sites with gaps in their extract records
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
For kitchens close to Esher station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

Questions from Esher
Do you cover smaller places like Esher?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Esher included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Can you come to Esher after we close?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. It means the site in Esher keeps running as normal. When you call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us, mention when the site is quiet.
Can you price the work without visiting?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we can’t see enough, we arrange a survey.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?
Yes. We inspect the system and produce a report with grease readings, photos and any inaccessible areas. It’s set out for your insurer or broker.
How long does a TR19 inspection take?
Testing takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Sites with several canopies take longer, and you can call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form to book it in.
What is grease thickness testing?
The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. We take readings at set points from canopy to fan.
Do we have to follow TR19 by law?
No. TR19® is a specification, not a statute. Without TR19 records, an insurance claim can be reduced or refused, so it matters in practice.
