TR19 inspection in Cheapside
A pre-clean survey looks at the whole system, from canopy to discharge. We check where the access panels are and whether every section can be reached, and grease readings are taken at set points. We’re often asked to deal with missing access panels found on survey and heavy grease suspected in the plenum or ducts, across access surveys, deposit thickness tests and pre-clean surveys.
In a village or hamlet like Cheapside, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.
The report is your system’s health record: a dated account with photos of everything we did. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal, ready for your insurer.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Parking and loading at the site
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- The condition we find in the survey
- How big the system is
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.
What to send for a quote
We can often survey from photos. Try to include:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

TR19 inspection around Cheapside
Food Standards Agency data counts about 33 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens in and around Cheapside, up to about a mile and a half out. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. The fire and rescue service for Cheapside is Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in Cheapside get their food hygiene inspections from Windsor and Maidenhead council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
A hospital like Heatherwood Hospital, about 1.8 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. For schools such as Cheapside CofE Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (St Leonard's Hill is about 3.4 miles north), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

What happens on the day
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the TR19 inspection, tidy up and leave you the report. The visit itself takes an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Cheapside.
- First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
- The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
- Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
- We measure the grease and photograph each point.
- You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
Getting a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix
We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
- Mechanical faults in the extract
If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Cheapside and across Windsor and Maidenhead. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.
Questions from Cheapside
Can a school canteen extract in Cheapside be done out of term time?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 9 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Cheapside, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Do you cover smaller places like Cheapside?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Cheapside is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
How long does grease testing take?
Testing takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Sites with several canopies take longer, and you can ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email to book it in.
What does a pre-clean survey involve?
We survey, measure and photograph the system first. The survey can be done from photos and details or on site, as suits the job.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. We always survey first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.
Can you price the work without visiting?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
What is grease thickness testing?
The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. Readings are taken at set points through the system.
Why act early in Cheapside
If there’s a fire or a claim, your insurer may ask for TR19 records. Missing records can put a claim at risk. Getting an inspection done now starts that paper trail. A fault that closes a site in a village like Cheapside affects everyone who depends on it.
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

Part by part
Horizontal duct runs
Grease settles on the floor of horizontal ducts as the air cools. Readings are taken along each run through its access panels.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
In healthcare and care settings, kitchens may run from early until late. Testing shows if the cleaning interval keeps pace.
Keeping the system healthy
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Report grease dripping from the canopy
- Keep access panels clear and unpainted
- Clean grease off the canopy between professional cleans
- Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
For an insurer audit, send them the report as it is, including readings, photos and any inaccessible sections.
Fit access panels where the survey finds sections cannot be reached, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.
