TR19 inspection near Apsley

What staff can safely do

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

How we handle TR19 inspection in Apsley

Many insurers ask for proof that kitchen extract systems are cleaned and inspected to TR19®. Missing records can lead to a claim being reduced or refused. Our TR19 audits give sites in Apsley and across Hertfordshire a clear record of the system’s condition. The work covers deposit thickness tests, insurer audits and post-clean checks, and people most often call us about checking the result of a recent clean and kitchens whose menu or hours have changed.

Kitchens around a place like Apsley are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.

Helping us quote

Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

How the job changes from site to site

Extract fan and discharge

The discharge at the end of the system is checked as well, as grease can build up there too.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Education kitchens need TR19 inspections like any other. Testing shows whether the interval suits.

Do you need TR19 inspection in Apsley?

Grease builds up as cooking vapour cools inside the extract. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Missing access panels found on survey
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
  • Pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Apsley (High Elms Manor is about 4.1 miles south-east), fitting access panels needs care.

Questions to ask before you book

  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Whether a written report and pictures are included
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • What insurance they carry

Apsley questions

Which fire authority looks after Apsley?

Apsley is in the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Apsley during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. There are about 22 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Apsley. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

What should I send you?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Do you cover Apsley?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Apsley.

What is post-clean verification?

Post-clean verification is a check after a clean, with fresh grease readings and photos. It works whoever carried out the clean.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.

What accreditations do you have?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

The process

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Your opening hours decide when we come to Apsley, not ours.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Advice

What a clean won’t put right

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Hidden runs that need access panels first
  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Insurer audits
  • Deposit thickness tests
  • Post-clean checks
  • Access surveys

Aftercare tips

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Diary the next grease test and clean
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
  • Flag oily drips near the extract

Readings of 500 microns or more are highlighted as needing immediate spot cleaning, and we can arrange it.

Close the access gaps found during inspection, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.

Apsley kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 83 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 47 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Apsley. Each kitchen extract among them can be measured for grease to set the right cleaning interval. Apsley sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. In Apsley, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Dacorum council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Two Waters Primary School or anywhere near Apsley, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Hemel Hempstead Hospital about 0.9 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
