Kitchen extract cleaning in SS5: how it works
The canopy over the range is only the start of a kitchen extract system. Behind it sit the plenum and grease filters, then the ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, and grease settles in every one of them. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. The work covers vertical risers, extract fans and discharge points, and people most often call us about fat running down the canopy edge and a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction.
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- We survey the system, from your pictures or on site, canopy to discharge.
- We take grease readings at set points and give you a fixed quote.
- The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
- We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
- We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.
What you will pay
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Getting a quote
To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, photos of the system and any previous report or certificate. Then call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Local landmarks in Hockley
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Greensward Academy, The Bull Public House and Marylands Nature Reserve. Nearby too are Emmanuel Church Hall (under half a mile south) and Plumberow Primary Academy (0.5 miles north-east). There’s a railway station in Hockley itself: Hockley station. Nearby you’ll also find Southend University Hospital (3.7 miles south) and Rayleigh Castle (2.5 miles south-west). Not far away are Blue House Farm.
Kitchen extracts across SS5
In SS5, a busy kitchen in a place such as Rochford, Hockley and Hawkwell and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites across SS5 don’t have to lose a day.
Hockley: If you run a café or takeaway near Hockley station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. A hospital like Southend University Hospital, about 3.7 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
What staff can safely do
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
For landlords and multi-site operators
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
What happens if it’s left?
After a fire, one of the first questions is often when the extract was last cleaned. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and may reduce or refuse a claim without it. A current certificate is far easier to produce than an explanation.

Between visits
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Give the canopy a daily wipe
- Keep grease collection points emptied
- Switch the fan on before cooking starts
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
When the clean is finished, grease readings are taken again at the same points, giving you before and after readings alongside the pictures. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Keep the outside of the canopy wiped and any grease cups emptied. A daily wipe isn’t a deep clean, but it helps between visits.
When it’s something else
Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It does not solve:
- A grease trap that needs emptying
- A broken extract fan that won’t run
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
FAQs for SS5
Can you price the work without visiting?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
How do you protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before any work starts, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?
We clean every part the grease travels through. Canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, risers, fan and discharge are all included, reached through access panels where needed.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
What types of premises do you cover?
We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.
Where does the waste go?
We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.
How often does a kitchen extract system need cleaning?
The minimum is set by BESA guidance on daily use, from 3-monthly to 12-monthly. Kitchens that fry or grill a lot may need cleaning sooner, which grease thickness testing will show.
