How kitchen extract cleaning works in SL2

Cooking sends fat-laden vapour into the canopy with every service. It cools inside the duct and settles as a sticky film that thickens month by month. That film is fuel, and cleaning the whole system is how you keep it under control. The work covers canopies and hoods, extract fans and vertical risers, and common reasons people get in touch are an inspection that picked up a dirty extract and ductwork thick with old, hardened grease.

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, make the system safe, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.

  1. We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
  2. Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

Where we work in SL2

Kitchens across SL2 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

SL2 is within the area we cover, which takes in London and the South East. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote, wherever it is in SL2.

Britwell: Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Dorney Court is about 2.9 miles south-west), access may need planning. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Britwell is Wexham Park Hospital, about 2.1 miles east.

When something else is needed

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what kitchen extract cleaning won’t do:

  • An undersized canopy or fan
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
  • A broken extract fan that won’t run

Common problems we fix in SL2

What’s on the menu matters as much as how much is cooked. Frying, grilling and roasting send far more fat into the canopy than steaming or boiling, so two kitchens with the same hours can need very different intervals.

Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • A system with no record of a TR19 clean
  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records
  • Rancid smells from grease in the duct
  • Grease dripping from the canopy or filters

What the work involves, part by part

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Some healthcare kitchens never fully close. We plan the clean around meal times and work in a contained, tidy way, so residents and patients are not disturbed.

Restaurant and pub kitchens

Restaurants and pubs tend to cook long hours with plenty of frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. We clean after close or before opening.

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Give the canopy a daily wipe
  • Book the next clean before the date on the report

You leave with a date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date isn’t missed.

Keep the outside of the canopy wiped and any grease cups emptied. A daily wipe isn’t a deep clean, but it helps between visits.

What happens if it’s left?

Leaving the clean until the next refit does not make the grease go away. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Regular cleans keep each visit shorter.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Common questions in SL2

What accreditations do you hold?

We are members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we’re fully insured.

How long does a kitchen extract clean take?

A small kitchen with a short duct can be done in a few hours, but large systems may be spread over more than one visit. Your quote says how long to expect.

Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?

TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

Is a quote from photos possible?

Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.

Do you cover SL2?

Yes. We work in SL2 and across Slough, within our South East and London area. To book, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.
