Kitchen extract cleaning across ME1: what to expect
Across ME1, we clean kitchen extract systems to BESA TR19® Grease. The job starts with a survey and grease readings, then works through canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, fan and discharge. At the finish there’s a TR19 certificate and a before and after photo report. Common call-outs are for poor airflow at the canopy and grease smells coming from the extract, across discharge points, canopies and hoods and vertical risers.
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the kitchen extract cleaning, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
- We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.
How we quote
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.
Why choose Duct Doctor

Kitchen extract cleaning across ME1: local notes
Across ME1, from Chatham, Rochester and Strood outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites in ME1 can keep trading. Parts of ME1 are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings. Fans and cowls on sea-facing roofs are worth checking at every visit.
Rochester Riverside: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Nicholas or elsewhere in Rochester Riverside, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Commuter trade near Rochester station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
Why it fails
Grease in the extract matters because it burns. A flare-up on the range can be drawn up into the canopy and duct, where burning grease can carry a fire along the ducts and into other parts of the building. For a kitchen in ME1, keeping that fuel under control is part of the fire risk assessment.
Common reasons sites call us include:
- An extract that no longer clears the smoke
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- Years of baked-on grease in the ducts
Part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be planned for holidays or quiet times. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.
Extract fan and discharge
The discharge is where air leaves the building, and grease can collect there too. We clean it where it can be safely reached, and any limits are recorded.
Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Run the extract fan throughout cooking
- Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
- Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
Any section without access is marked on the report. That is part of an honest TR19 clean, not a failing, and new access panels can be fitted so the next clean covers it.
Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
When it’s something else
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- An undersized canopy or fan
- Fat blocking the kitchen drains
- Fire dampers that will not close (that needs damper testing and remedials)
ME1: your questions answered
Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?
Extract grease is fuel for a kitchen fire, which is why many insurers require TR19 cleaning. Each clean gives you a certificate and photo report to show them.
What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?
BESA guidance gives minimum intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months, depending on daily cooking hours. Kitchens that fry or grill a lot may need cleaning sooner, which grease thickness testing will show.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, our work sits within an independently audited scheme. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
