Kitchen extract cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Blacknest

The ducts are where most of the grease hides. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, scraping heavy deposits by hand before degreasing. Anything out of reach is noted in the report and extra access panels can be added. Typical jobs include a system with no record of a TR19 clean and cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey, on horizontal duct runs, plenums and filters and discharge points. Canopy cleaning, extract cleaning and duct cleaning are often used to mean the same thing, but in Blacknest, as everywhere, the insurer wants the full system cleaned, not just the hood.

Most kitchens in Blacknest fall into one of BESA’s three bands: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate use and yearly for light use, with grease readings setting the real interval.

In a small place like Blacknest, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Leave it or put it right?

If there’s a fire and the extract hasn’t been cleaned, the paperwork becomes the problem. Many policies require cleaning to TR19, and an insurer can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. A certificate in the file answers that question. A planned visit to Blacknest is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

How the job changes from site to site

Ductwork and risers

Bends and changes of direction trap more grease than straight runs. We test at points like these before and after cleaning, so the report shows the difference.

Extract fan and discharge

At the end of the system is the discharge, which can collect grease and stain the surface around it. We clean it where it can be safely reached, and any limits are recorded.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Run the extract fan throughout cooking
  • Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
  • Give the canopy a daily wipe
  • Book the next clean before the date on the report

You leave with a date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. A 3, 6 or 12-monthly maintenance plan keeps it on track, so the date is not missed.

Wipe the canopy down regularly and empty grease troughs or collection points. It will not replace a TR19 clean, but it slows what reaches the duct.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system. Somewhere as small as Blacknest, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
  2. We take grease readings at set points and give you a fixed quote.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. Readings are repeated, pictures taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Advice

Questions from Blacknest

Do you cover smaller places like Blacknest?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you work overnight in Blacknest?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. It means the site in Blacknest keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Is a quote from photos possible?

Yes, for many jobs. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and a fixed quote typically follows within one working day. If pictures aren’t enough, we’ll survey first.

Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?

We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before we start, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Honest limits

Kitchen extract cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
  • A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Plenums and filters
  • Vertical risers
  • Discharge points
  • Extract fans
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Canopies and hoods

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

What we’re called out for in Blacknest

Hours of cooking are the biggest factor. Under BESA guidance, heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means a clean at least every 3 months, moderate use every 6 months and light use every 12. They are minimums: measured grease levels set the real interval.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer
  • Fat running down the canopy edge
  • Years of baked-on grease in the ducts
  • A system with no record of a TR19 clean

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Holy Trinity CofE Primary School or anywhere near Blacknest, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Before you book anyone

  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether VAT is included
