Kitchen extract cleaning in Allhallows

What happens if it’s left?

TR19® is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and in a kitchen that means keeping extract grease under control. TR19 is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

The ducts are where most of the grease hides. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, removing thick grease by hand, then using degreasers, hot water or steam to suit the deposit. Anything out of reach is noted in the report, and new panels can be fitted. Typical jobs include grease smells coming from the extract and years of baked-on grease in the ducts, across canopies and hoods, horizontal duct runs and vertical risers. Most calls from Allhallows come after an insurer, an EHO or a fire officer asks to see the last TR19 certificate. Either way, the answer is the same: a proper clean and the paperwork to match.

A kitchen running fryers and chargrills all day builds up grease much faster than one that mostly steams and boils, so the interval is set by what you cook as well as how long.

Somewhere as small as Allhallows, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.

Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in Allhallows

Do you work in villages like Allhallows?

Yes. Allhallows is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Allhallows?

The local authority for Allhallows is Medway council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?

Everything from canopy to discharge: canopy inside and out, plenum, grease filters, ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we cannot reach is recorded on the report.

What does kitchen extract cleaning cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How long does a kitchen extract clean take?

Length of duct, grease levels and access all affect it. Most jobs take a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

How it works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Allhallows can be planned properly.

  1. You send pictures or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
  2. Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Move anything stored near the system

How to get a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Allhallows kitchens: local notes

Allhallows lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency data counts about 4 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 4 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Allhallows. Wherever food is cooked under a canopy, the extract above it gathers grease and needs cleaning on a schedule. Kitchens in Allhallows get their food hygiene inspections from Medway council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Allhallows Primary Academy tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Allhallows, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. A hospital like Chartwell Private Hospital, about 5.5 miles north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
  • Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place
  • Keep grease collection points emptied

After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, giving you before and after readings alongside the photos. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. A filter that is clean and seated properly stops more grease getting into the plenum, which slows build-up further down the system.

How the job changes from site to site

Canopy and plenum

Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. Both are scraped and degreased inside and out, including the filter housing.

Grease filters

Baffle filters are cleaned as part of every TR19 clean, and put back so they seat correctly. We’ll tell you if any need replacing.

Honest limits

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • An undersized canopy or fan
  • Ductwork that’s corroded, split or leaking (that is for a ductwork contractor)
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
