How we handle grease trap cleaning in Chelsea

A grease trap catches fats, oils and grease from the kitchen sinks before they reach the drain. As the waste water cools, the grease floats and stays in the trap while the water carries on to the drain. Over time, the trap fills up and needs emptying and cleaning. The work covers school and care home kitchens, under-sink grease traps and restaurants and takeaways, and people most often call us about a full, neglected grease trap and a small trap that fills too quickly.

Across London, council environmental health teams inspect food businesses, and the cleanliness of the whole kitchen is part of what they look at. A deep clean ahead of an inspection, or after one, is a common reason kitchens in Chelsea get in touch.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What happens on the day

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in Chelsea is no exception.

  1. We find the trap and check how it’s connected.
  2. We ask for the sinks that drain into the trap not to be used.
  3. The trap is emptied of grease and food waste.
  4. We clean the chambers, baffles and connections.
  5. We put it back together, run water through and remove the waste.

How to prepare

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Advice

Chelsea: your questions answered

Which council inspects kitchens in Chelsea?

The local authority for Chelsea is Kensington and Chelsea council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. How often a business is inspected depends on the council’s risk rating for it, so the kitchen needs to be ready at any time.

Does London parking affect a job in Chelsea?

Parking and loading in London need planning, so tell us about bays, permits and building rules when you book. Working overnight, as we often do in London, usually makes it simpler.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Every site has its own report.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Where does the grease from the trap go?

The fat, oil, grease and solids we remove go with us. It isn’t poured back down the drain, of course.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

What grease trap cleaning looks like in Chelsea

The FSA’s data shows about 122 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 111 hotels and B&Bs registered in Chelsea and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever they cook, the kitchen and its drains need the same attention as a restaurant’s. Night work is normal for London kitchens, and the kitchen is handed back ready for the morning. Kitchens in Chelsea get their food hygiene inspections from Kensington and Chelsea council. They look at the cleanliness of the whole kitchen: walls, floors, ceilings and equipment. A record of each deep clean helps show the kitchen is kept in order.

Carlyle's House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses around Chelsea; event kitchens at places like that work in bursts, so a deep clean after a busy season helps. Royal Brompton Hospital, about within half a mile west, is the nearest hospital to Chelsea; healthcare kitchens can’t stop cooking, so deep cleans are worked around meal times. Hall kitchens near Former Welsh Congregational Church or elsewhere in Chelsea may have older sinks and drains, so a grease trap check is worth adding to a deep clean.

Looking after it afterwards

So the system stays in good health:

  • Report slow or smelly sinks early
  • Do not rely on hot water to clear grease
  • Keep access to the trap clear
  • Book trap cleans at a set interval

Scrape plates into the bin before washing up. Use strainers in the sink plugholes so less solid waste gets through.

A fixed cleaning interval means the trap never gets overfull. We agree the timing with you.

How the job changes from site to site

School, care home and staff kitchens

Kitchens with fixed mealtimes build up grease more predictably. Planned cleaning fits their routine.

Grease interceptors

Grease interceptors are larger units that serve busier kitchens. They hold more grease and solids, but they still need regular emptying and cleaning.

When it’s something else

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • A leaking sink waste or trap connection
  • Blockages in the public sewer beyond the property
  • Drains that need jetting rather than trap cleaning

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Pot wash sinks
  • Kitchen waste pipes
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Inline grease traps

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Leave it or put it right?

Pests are drawn to grease and food waste. Keeping the trap clean removes something they’re looking for as part of a clean kitchen. A building in Chelsea may have flats or offices above and alongside, and a fault in the system can affect them too.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.
