How we handle grease trap cleaning in Brompton

A clean trap means flowing drains and no foul smells. We empty the built-up grease and food solids and the chambers and baffles cleaned and the trap checked before we leave. Common call-outs are for an overdue grease trap and an under-sink unit that needs regular emptying, on pot wash sinks, kitchen waste pipes and restaurants and takeaways.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are compact and run long hours, so grease collects behind equipment, on ceilings and in drains and grease traps. For a kitchen in Brompton, the work is usually done overnight, between the last service and the first.

We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

How it works

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Expect the work in Brompton to happen after your last customer leaves, not during trading.

  1. We start by finding the trap and checking its inlet and outlet.
  2. The sinks feeding the trap are kept out of use while we work.
  3. Built-up fat, oil and grease is removed from the trap.
  4. Every part of the trap is scraped and cleaned, including the baffles.
  5. The trap is reassembled, checked for leaks and the waste taken away.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Advice

Brompton: your questions answered

Do you work at weekends in Brompton?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Brompton doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Can you work in school kitchens in Brompton during the holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Around Brompton, the Food Standards Agency lists about 67 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Do you clean under-sink and inline grease traps?

Under-sink and inline grease traps, and larger interceptors. They’re emptied, cleaned and checked in the same careful way.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

Do I get a report after the visit?

Yes, always. The report is dated and includes photos, and TR19® Grease cleans come with a certificate through the BESCA VHE portal. Keep it in your maintenance log.

How regularly does a grease trap need emptying?

It depends on the size of the trap and how busy the kitchen is. A small trap fills more quickly than a large one, and busy kitchens fill them faster still. We will suggest an interval after the first clean.

Signs you need grease trap cleaning in Brompton

For a kitchen in Brompton or anywhere else, the trap is out of sight and out of mind. Hidden under a sink or in a floor, it’s often ignored until something goes wrong.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • An under-sink unit that needs regular emptying
  • A slow-draining kitchen sink
  • A full, neglected grease trap
  • An interceptor full of grease and solids

Half-term is a good time for school kitchens, at schools like Hellenic College of London for instance, to have the grease trap emptied and the kitchen deep cleaned.

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 106 pubs and bars and about 172 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Brompton. In Brompton, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Kensington and Chelsea council. Grease behind equipment or on a ceiling is the kind of thing an inspection can note. A cleaning log that includes deep cleans and grease trap visits shows the work is planned. Night work is normal for London kitchens, and the kitchen is handed back ready for the morning.

Royal Marsden Hospital, about under half a mile south-west, is the nearest hospital to Brompton; healthcare kitchens can’t stop cooking, so deep cleans are worked around meal times.

What affects the cost of grease trap cleaning

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:

  • The size of the system
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

We can often survey from photos. Try to include:

  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • A few general shots of the system

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Why act early in Brompton

Pests are drawn to grease and food waste. Keeping the trap clean removes something they’re looking for, alongside good kitchen hygiene. Shared walls, risers and roofs mean a problem at one London site seldom stays put.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

What you get with us

  • A fixed price before any work starts
  • Work around your opening hours, with 24/7 emergency cover
  • A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
  • Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001

For landlords and multi-site operators

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Fit sink strainers to catch food scraps
  • Keep the grease trap on a regular cleaning schedule
  • Tell us when sinks start draining slowly
  • Tell us if your menu or hours change

The waste we remove leaves with us. There’s no greasy waste left on site after the visit.

More cooking means more grease in the trap. Shortening the cleaning interval now stops it overflowing.
