Grease filter exchange in Tapnage
In Tapnage, our filter exchange runs on a schedule set by how much the kitchen cooks. Busy kitchens need changes more often while a lighter kitchen can go longer. We agree the interval with you at the start. The work covers school and hospital kitchens, restaurants and pubs and island canopies, and people most often call us about gaps where filters have been removed and filters left unwashed on busy weeks.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.
Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Why act early in Tapnage
Changing filters on schedule costs far less disruption than a blocked extract. It’s one of the simplest parts of looking after the system, and one of the easiest to let slip. In a small place like Tapnage, a system that fails can take a site out of use.
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.
What you get with us
- Every visit written up, with pictures
- CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
- Survey first, then a fixed quote
- A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
What grease filter exchange looks like in Tapnage
Food Standards Agency data counts about 28 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 4 takeaways and sandwich shops in and around Tapnage, up to about a mile and a half out. Each canopy among them has filters that load with grease and need swapping or cleaning. Fire safety in Tapnage falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s Winchester City council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Tapnage. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as The Henry Cort Community College or anywhere near Tapnage, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Between visits
So the system stays in good health:
- Do not refit a filter that is bent
- Keep every filter in place during service
- Clean the canopy surfaces regularly
- Report a dripping canopy early
The next exchange is already in the diary. If cooking increases, we can change filters more often to keep up.
Saturated filters let more grease through. Getting onto a regular exchange now keeps grease out of the plenum and ductwork between full cleans.
Part by part
Busy restaurant and pub kitchens
Heavy cooking means more grease reaching every part of the system. Changing them on time protects the ducts behind.
The plenum
Heavy grease in the plenum often follows clogged or missing filters or that the next TR19 clean is due.
What staff can safely do
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
The process
Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes less than an hour in most kitchens. Somewhere as small as Tapnage, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
- A change schedule is agreed to match the kitchen’s cooking hours.
- On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
- We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
- Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear the space around the work
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
Getting a quote
To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Signs you need grease filter exchange in Tapnage
Missing filters are more common than you’d think. A missing filter leaves an open route into the system where it settles out of sight.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Filter washing that keeps being missed
- Smoke and heat lingering under the hood
- Hand-washed filters that still look greasy
- Bent or damaged filters that don’t sit properly
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Knowle Hospital about 0.9 miles south-east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
What your quote should include
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether the figure could change on the day

Tapnage: your questions answered
Which fire authority looks after Tapnage?
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Tapnage. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Do you work in villages like Tapnage?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Tapnage is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do we need to close the kitchen while filters are changed?
Visits are short, and we can come before or after service. The clean set goes in as soon as the dirty one comes out.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. We work across South East England and London, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.
What’s TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
What accreditations do you have?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
When it’s something else
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- Grease behind the filters that a swap can’t remove
- Odours from the discharge that filters won’t stop
- A canopy that does not capture the vapour properly
