Grease filter exchange near Fareham

Grease filter exchange in Fareham, done properly

Grease filters are the first line of defence in a kitchen extract. Their job is to stop grease getting further into the system, but only while they’re reasonably clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. We are often asked to deal with a greasy plenum behind the filters and filters that come out of the sink still dirty, across school and hospital kitchens, island canopies and wall canopies.

Many kitchens in a town like Fareham were fitted into buildings built for something else, so duct runs can be awkward, with bends, long horizontal sections and too few access panels. Where the duct can’t be reached, new panels can be fitted, and anything left uncleaned is recorded on the report.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
  • Tell us if the menu or opening hours change
  • Book full TR19 cleans alongside filter changes
  • Keep every filter in place during service

Between visits, check that every filter is still in place. A missing filter leaves a gap for grease so tell us if you need a replacement.

Damaged filters leave gaps in the defence. Replacing them early protects the plenum and ductwork.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Common problems we fix in Fareham

Every fry, grill and sauté sends grease-laden vapour upwards. Much of it is trapped by the filters, and day by day they load up until the air can barely get through.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Grease dripping from the canopy
  • Blocked baffle filters
  • Grease collecting in the filter channels
  • Gaps where filters have been removed

For kitchens close to Fareham station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Questions to ask before booking

What affects the cost of grease filter exchange

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • What state the system is in
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Asking for a quote

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • A fan that is failing or too weak for the system
  • A canopy that doesn’t capture the vapour properly
  • Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly.

What we do, step by step

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. Before the visit, a few photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan the work in Fareham.

  1. First, we record the size, type and number of filters in each canopy.
  2. A change schedule is agreed to match the kitchen’s cooking hours.
  3. On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
  4. We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
  5. Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Clear the space around the work

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Questions from Fareham

Is grease filter exchange any different in a coastal place like Fareham?

It can. Salt air reaches Fareham, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.

Can you work in Fareham outside opening hours?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Fareham does not have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.

Can you clean our existing filters instead?

Yes, filter cleaning is available. The first step is looking at the filters you have because bent or damaged ones may need replacing.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

What does grease filter exchange cost?

We price it on the number of filters and the visit frequency. Send us details or pictures and we will quote quickly.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.

What staff can safely do

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Grease, kitchens and Fareham

Fareham lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 82 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 21 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Fareham. Each canopy among them has filters that load with grease and need swapping or cleaning. In Fareham, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Fareham council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St John The Evangelist or elsewhere in Fareham, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Fareham is Knowle Hospital, about 2 miles north.
