Grease filter exchange for sites in Portmore

Grease filter exchange for kitchens and businesses in Portmore

Washing filters in the kitchen sink is messy and easily missed on a busy week. With a filter exchange, we bring a clean set and take the dirty one away, so the canopy is never left without filters. The work covers island canopies, wall canopies and restaurants and pubs, and the jobs we see most are hand-washed filters that still look greasy and a canopy running with filters missing.

In a small place like Portmore, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

What affects the cost of grease filter exchange

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The condition of the system
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

What to send for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • A few general shots of the system

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before any work starts.

Portmore: your questions answered

Do you work in villages like Portmore?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Portmore is covered. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Which fire authority looks after Portmore?

Fire safety enforcement in Portmore is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

What happens to the dirty filters?

Yes. The dirty filters are taken away for cleaning and the clean set stays in the canopy.

Is filter exchange enough instead of a full extract clean?

It does not. Some grease passes the filters as vapour and settles in the ducts, so the full system still needs cleaning to TR19.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

How long does the visit take?

On site, it takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. Larger systems naturally take longer, and the quote will say how long.

Is there a cleaning option for the filters we have?

Yes, filters can be cleaned on a schedule as well as exchanged. We will talk you through which suits your kitchen when you get in touch.

When something else is needed

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • A fan that’s failing or too weak for the system
  • A canopy that needs a proper clean
  • Odours from the discharge that filters won’t stop

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall canopies
  • School and hospital kitchens
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Mesh filters

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes less than an hour in most kitchens, and we clear up before we go. Somewhere like Portmore, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. First, we check the canopies and the filters in them.
  2. We note any filters that are bent, damaged or missing.
  3. Greasy filters are swapped for clean ones.
  4. The filters are checked for fit before we go.
  5. We tell you if the plenum or canopy needs a clean.

Before we arrive

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Advice

For landlords and multi-site operators

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Don’t refit a filter that is bent
  • Clean the canopy surfaces regularly
  • Make sure no filter is left out
  • Keep the canopy clear for exchange visits

There’s no waiting: the canopy is ready as soon as the clean set is fitted. The dirty set leaves with us for cleaning.

Dripping filters are a clear sign they’re full. Changing them now reduces the fuel above the cooking, and it’s worth checking the plenum too.

Grease, kitchens and Portmore

Sea air reaches Portmore, which sits within about 1 mile of the coast. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 38 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 10 takeaways and sandwich shops across Portmore and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a canopy, the grease filters are the first line of defence and clog quickly. It’s New Forest council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Portmore. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Portmore (Beaulieu Palace House is about 4.5 miles north-east), fitting access panels needs care. For schools such as Southlands School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Portmore is about 2 miles north-east of Lymington, in Hampshire. Wherever you are in the SO41 postcode area, we can carry out grease filter exchange at your premises. What the work involves, part by part

School, care home and staff kitchens

Even kitchens with fixed meal times build up grease though normally at a gentler pace.

Canopy filter housings

The filter housing holds each filter at an angle in the canopy. A damaged housing leaves gaps.

Common problems we fix in Portmore

Hand-washed filters often come back still greasy. Grease lodges deep in baffles and mesh, and a quick rinse leaves it there.

What we’re most often called out for:

  • Grease left in baffles after washing
  • Staff short of time to wash filters
  • Weak extraction at the canopy
  • Missing filters in the filter bank

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Lymington New Forest Hospital is the nearest hospital to Portmore, about 1 mile south-west.
