Grease filter exchange in Oakwood

We run grease filter exchange for all kinds of kitchens in Oakwood, whether there’s one canopy or many. We can come before or after service so nobody has to stop cooking. We are often asked to deal with staff short of time to wash filters and gaps where filters have been removed, across school and hospital kitchens, restaurants and pubs and baffle filters.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Oakwood, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal, ready for your insurer.

What happens on the day

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes well under an hour for most canopies. In Oakwood, as across London, we usually work overnight or at weekends and hand the site back ready to open.

  1. We count and measure the filters in every canopy.
  2. Together we set how often the filters should be changed.
  3. On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
  4. We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
  5. Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.

How to prepare

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Your questions about grease filter exchange in Oakwood

Can you come to Oakwood after we close?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Oakwood doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. When you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us, mention when the site is quiet.

How do you handle parking and loading in Oakwood?

We plan it in advance, so let us know about loading bays, permits and access rules at the building. Much of our London work is done overnight, which helps.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.

Which records should we keep?

Every certificate and report from each visit, kept together in your maintenance log, along with your own cleaning log. BESA advises that certificates record the date, location and technician.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

Do you clean filters as well as exchanging them?

We can. Some kitchens prefer their own filters cleaned on a schedule, and others prefer a straight swap. We make sure the canopy is ready for service either way.

How often should grease filters be changed?

It varies from kitchen to kitchen. We look at your cooking and set an interval to match, and adjust it if needed.

What grease filter exchange looks like in Oakwood

The Food Standards Agency lists about 32 pubs, bars and clubs as registered food businesses in and around Oakwood, up to about a mile and a half out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Oakwood sits within the area of London Fire Brigade. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Most London extract cleaning happens at night, after the last service.

Forty Hall, about 3.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses near Oakwood; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Wolfson Hillel Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Thomas's Church or elsewhere in Oakwood, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Oakwood

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Greater London. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Don’t let the full clean slip because filters are changed
  • Tell us if the menu or opening hours change
  • Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
  • Tell us if a filter is bent or damaged

If the plenum behind the filters looks greasy, we say so. It can be a sign that a full TR19® clean is due, and we can arrange it.

A kitchen that is getting busier needs its filters changed more often. Changing the interval early stops grease building up unseen in the ducts.

What staff can safely do

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

How the job changes from site to site

Baffle filters

Baffle filters are robust and widely used in commercial canopies. They still need regular cleaning, because the grease they collect builds up.

Mesh filters

Mesh filters use layers of metal mesh to trap grease. In a busy kitchen, mesh soon blocks, so they need changing often.

What grease filter exchange can’t fix

Not every problem is solved by grease filter exchange, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • A noisy or failed extract fan
  • A heavily greased plenum or canopy, which needs cleaning to TR19
  • A canopy too small for the cooking beneath it

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer before you book.
