How we handle grease filter exchange in Kingsmead
Washing filters in the kitchen sink is messy and easily missed on a busy week. An exchange service means clean filters arrive and greasy ones leave and the canopy is refilled straight away. We’re often asked to deal with a greasy plenum behind the filters and filters left unwashed on busy weeks, across baffle filters, mesh filters and school and hospital kitchens.
For a kitchen in or near Kingsmead, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with pictures, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Aftercare tips
How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Look out for drips from the canopy
- Keep the canopy clear for exchange visits
- Tell us if the menu or opening hours change
- Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
Nothing changes for your staff, except one less greasy job. Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day and let us know of any changes to opening hours.
If cooking has stepped up, the filter schedule should too. Adjusting the schedule now prevents a build-up behind the canopy.
Kingsmead kitchens: local notes
The Food Standards Agency lists about 7 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses in Kingsmead and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Fire safety in Kingsmead falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. It’s Winchester City council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Kingsmead. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Knowle Hospital (about 3.1 miles south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Do you need grease filter exchange in Kingsmead?
The type of cooking matters. Frying, grilling and chargrilling produce far more grease than steaming or baking so no single schedule suits every kitchen.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Grease left in baffles after washing
- Damaged filters letting grease past
- Gaps where filters have been removed
- Grease dripping from the canopy
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Swanmore College of Technology tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether a survey comes first
How the visit works
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. For a village or hamlet like Kingsmead, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.
- We count and measure the filters in every canopy.
- We agree a schedule that suits how much the kitchen cooks.
- On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
- We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
- We flag any damaged filters or anything wrong with the canopy.
How to prepare
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
How to get a quote
For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Kingsmead questions
Which environmental health team covers Kingsmead?
The local authority for Kingsmead is Winchester City council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Do you work in villages like Kingsmead?
Yes, Kingsmead is part of our area, however small the site. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we have been trading since 2009.
How regularly do grease filters need exchanging?
That depends on the cooking. Kitchens that fry and grill all day need changes more often than lighter ones. We agree the interval with you.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
We never leave them off the paperwork. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
What accreditations do you have?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
What affects the cost of grease filter exchange
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- How big the system is
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Any permits to work or inductions
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
What we need to know
When you call or email, these details help:
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- Problems your staff have spotted
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
What the work involves, part by part
School, care home and staff kitchens
Even kitchens with fixed meal times build up grease though normally at a gentler pace.
Mesh filters
Mesh filters use layers of metal mesh to trap grease. They clog quickly in a busy kitchen and need frequent attention.
Leave it or put it right?
Grease dripping from the canopy is a sign the filters can’t hold any more. Left, it ends up on equipment, food areas and staff and that is the kind of thing inspectors look for. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before any work starts.
