Grease filter exchange for sites in California

Grease filter exchange for kitchens and businesses in California

The filters in the canopy are the first thing cooking vapour meets. Their job is to stop grease getting further into the system and they do it best when they’re clean. With grease filter exchange, clean filters replace greasy ones at regular intervals. We are often asked to deal with grease dripping from the canopy and grease collecting in the filter channels, across restaurants and pubs, wall canopies and baffle filters.

In a smaller place like California, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What happens on the day

Your staff don’t need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Because the survey comes first, a visit to California can normally be finished without a second trip.

  1. We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
  2. Together we set how often the filters should be changed.
  3. At each visit, the greasy filters are lifted out.
  4. We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
  5. Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.

Before we arrive

  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Getting a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few photos and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

What affects the quote in California

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • How big the system is

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Grease, kitchens and California

Look up California on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 92 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 57 takeaways and sandwich shops across California and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on its filters to catch grease before it reaches the duct. Food hygiene inspections in California are the job of Buckinghamshire council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. California is covered by Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital about 0.5 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in California, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

California is about 1 mile south of Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire. If you need grease filter exchange in California, it’s easy to get a fixed quote: please call 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Our area covers London and the South East, including California. Across Buckinghamshire, we cover 263 places, California among them. Milton Keynes is in our area too, about 16 miles from California.

Postcode districts we cover here for grease filter exchange: HP21, HP20 and HP19. That includes premises on Lee Road, Penn Road and Eaton Road and nearby roads. With the A41 and A418 close by, California is easy for our technicians to reach for grease filter exchange. Neighbouring places we cover for grease filter exchange include Aylesbury (1 mile north), Walton (1 mile east), Queens Park (1 mile east), Southcourt (1 mile south) and New Zealand (1 mile north). Further out, we also cover High Wycombe (13 miles south), Chesham (11 miles south-east), Buckingham (15 miles north-west), Amersham (13 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (6 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

Local landmarks in California

In California, that means kitchens and buildings near Pebble Brook School, Buckinghamshire UTC and King's Head Inn and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in California itself: Aylesbury station. Nearby you’ll also find Friars Square (less than half a mile north-east) and Dinton Castle (3.4 miles west). For a walk, there’s Beacon Hill.

What happens if it’s left?

For any kitchen in California, filters cannot stand in for a full TR19 clean. They do help keep the system in better shape between cleans and the canopy and plenum stay cleaner. Booking ahead lets us plan the trip to California at a time that suits you.

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

California questions

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in California during the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 28 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of California, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we will fit the work in.

Do you work overnight in California?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in California can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.

Who is the responsible person?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

What do you do with what you remove?

It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.

How much notice do you need?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Usually not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Is filter exchange enough instead of a full extract clean?

It doesn’t. Filters do not catch everything, so grease still reaches the ductwork, so the full system still needs cleaning to TR19.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Different parts, different methods

The plenum

With good filters, less grease ends up in the plenum, but it still needs cleaning as part of TR19.

Baffle filters

In a baffle filter, the air zigzags through metal baffles. Grease is thrown out of the airstream and collects on the baffles.

When to call us in California

However long the kitchen cooks each day, the filters see every minute of it. Heavy daily use means fast build-up so changes need to come round sooner.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grease filters clogged with grease
  • Grease dripping from the canopy
  • Filters that leave gaps in the canopy
  • Staff short of time to wash filters

Commuter trade near Aylesbury station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

What to look for in a quote

  • What insurance they carry
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • When the next visit should be, and why

Questions to ask before booking

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
  • Book full TR19 cleans alongside filter changes
  • Report damaged filters so they can be replaced
  • Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day

Once the clean filters are in, the kitchen can cook right away. We take the greasy filters with us to be cleaned.

Filter exchange and TR19 cleaning work best together. A maintenance plan that covers both keeps everything on track.
