Extract fan cleaning in California

What we are called out for in California

By the time air reaches the fan, it has passed the canopy, filters and duct. Whatever grease is still in it settles on the impeller and inside the housing, and the spinning blades fling it onto the walls of the housing.

The symptoms we’re asked about most include:

  • Less air being pulled from the kitchen
  • A motor area thick with grease
  • A heavily greased fan housing
  • Rough running from the extract fan

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital is the nearest hospital to California, about 0.5 miles north.

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

How we handle extract fan cleaning in California

Kitchen extract fans come in different forms: fans on the roof, fans built into the duct run, and fans on an outside wall. The way in depends on the type, and we plan that during the survey. We are often asked to deal with a fan shaking on its mounts and a fan left out of previous cleans, across centrifugal fans, in-line fans and discharge points.

In a smaller place like California, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

What happens on the day

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. Around California, access is usually simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.

  1. First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
  2. Once isolated, we open the fan up.
  3. The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. The fan goes back into service with a report on its condition.

How to prepare

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Ask for a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

California kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 92 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 57 takeaways and sandwich shops within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of California. Each kitchen extract among them ends at a fan, and grease on the impeller strains the motor. California sits within the area of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Environmental health officers from Buckinghamshire council inspect food businesses in California. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

If you run a café or takeaway near Aylesbury station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. School kitchens, at schools like Oak Green School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

California is about 1 mile south of Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire. California gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Our area takes in 263 places across Buckinghamshire, large and small. Milton Keynes is in our area too, around 16 miles away.

All of HP21, HP20 and HP19 is within our area for extract fan cleaning, from busy streets to back roads. That includes premises on Lee Road, Penn Road and Eaton Road and nearby roads. You will find California on the A41 and A418, so it’s easy for us to get to for extract fan cleaning. If your site is just outside California, we cover Aylesbury (1 mile north), Walton (1 mile east), Queens Park (1 mile east), Southcourt (1 mile south) and New Zealand (1 mile north). Within a short drive, we also cover High Wycombe (13 miles south), Chesham (11 miles south-east), Buckingham (15 miles north-west), Amersham (13 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (6 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

California: your questions answered

Which fire authority looks after California?

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for California. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Who inspects food businesses in California?

In California, it’s Buckinghamshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

What do you do with what you remove?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Is it safe to clean the fan while the kitchen is open?

The fan must be isolated, for safety. We clean out of hours, in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so cooking isn’t affected.

Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?

Yes, a full TR19 clean includes the fan. If a fan can’t be reached, the report says so, so you always know what was cleaned.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

Why it’s worth doing now in California

Cleaning the fan in California now is a short job: it takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. Waiting adds vibration, wear and a harder clean. Around California, a kitchen or building out of action is missed straight away.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Different parts, different methods

Inline duct fans

Some fans are built into the duct itself. We get to them through the duct or casing, once they’re isolated.

Roof-mounted fans

A roof fan sits in cooler air, so grease can settle heavily. We scrape and degrease the blades and casing.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

What affects the quote in California

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The scale of the work
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The condition of the system

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

Helping us quote

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

Want a quote for extract fan cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

Managing agents and facilities teams in California

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.
