Kitchen extract cleaning across HP19: what to expect
We’ve been trading since 2009, cleaning kitchen extracts across the South East and London. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers canopies and hoods, vertical risers and horizontal duct runs, and the jobs we see most are a kitchen with no current TR19 certificate and proof of cleaning requested by an insurer.
Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- We survey the system first, from your photos and details or on a site visit.
- Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
- Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
- The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
- Readings and photos are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.
What you’ll pay
We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.
What you get with us
- A fixed price before any work starts
- Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001
- Survey first, then a fixed quote
- Every visit written up, with photos
Getting a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Kitchen extract cleaning across HP19: local notes
Across HP19, from Aylesbury, Elmhurst and Southcourt outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
HP19 is within the area we cover, which takes in London and the South East. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote, wherever it is in HP19.
Haydon Hill: Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital is the nearest hospital to Haydon Hill, about 1.3 miles east. School kitchens, at schools like Thomas Hickman School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
- Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, giving you before and after readings alongside the pictures. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.
Why it fails
The reason for all this is fire. Flames from a pan or grill can be pulled into the canopy by the fan, and once grease in the duct catches, fire can spread through the building’s ductwork. That’s why controlling extract grease belongs in the fire risk assessment.
What we are most often called out for:
- A kitchen taken over without any extract records
- Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
Leave it or put it right?
After a fire, one of the first questions is often when the extract was last cleaned. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and may reduce or refuse a claim without it. A certificate in the file answers that question.
Questions to ask before booking
- If they look at the system before pricing
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
Part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School kitchens can look lightly used but still need a TR19 clean at least every 12 months under BESA guidance. School holidays are an easy time to do it.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
High-heat cooking loads the extract with grease, and measured readings show whether the minimum interval is enough.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
FAQs for HP19
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Strictly, the legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, not from TR19. In practice, TR19 is how kitchens show they’re managing grease, and many insurers ask for proof of it.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
What should I send you?
A short description and a few photos plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.
Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?
Because a dirty extract can spread a fire through a building. Many policies say the extract must be cleaned to TR19, and a claim may be reduced without proof, so keep every certificate.
What do I get after the clean?
You get both a certificate and a photo report. Keep them in the maintenance log with the fire risk assessment so they’re to hand when an insurer asks.
Do we have to close the kitchen for the clean?
We clean while the kitchen is closed, so evenings, overnight, early mornings and weekends are all options. We need the equipment switched off and cooled first.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
