- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
Why act early in Westbourne
Putting testing off does not change whether the dampers will close; it just means you do not know. The guidance from BESA is at least once a year, and a skipped year leaves a hole in your records as well. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Fire damper testing in Westbourne, done properly
In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. Typical jobs include damper actions from a fire risk assessment and buildings with no damper register, on motorised smoke dampers, wall and floor dampers and hospitals and care homes.
For a building in or near Westbourne, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
When it’s something else
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what fire damper testing will not do:
- Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Where we work
- Riser dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Offices and schools
- Hospitals and care homes
- Wall and floor dampers
The process
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Somewhere like Westbourne, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.
- We gather what’s known about the dampers, from drawings, registers or past reports.
- Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
- Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
- We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
- You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Move anything stored near the system
- Tell us where we can park and unload

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Fire dampers in Westbourne buildings
Westbourne is within about 2 miles of the coast. Salt air speeds up corrosion, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing. There are about 6 schools, colleges and universities, about 13 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) and about 5 hotels and B&Bs on the FSA’s food hygiene register within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Westbourne. Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. Havant War Memorial Hospital is the nearest hospital, about 2.8 miles west of Westbourne. Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who can’t easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed.
School buildings such as Westbourne Primary School are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers. Warblington Castle, about 2.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses near Westbourne, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later.
Westbourne is about 3 miles east of Havant, in West Sussex. We carry out fire damper testing for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Westbourne and the rest of West Sussex. Across West Sussex, we cover 371 places, Westbourne among them. We also work in Portsmouth, about 8 miles from Westbourne.
Work in PO10 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your site is on The Square, Church Road and Crockford Road or anywhere close by, we can help. Part by part
Offices and retail
In shared buildings, some dampers sit inside tenants’ space. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.
Ceiling voids and risers
Damp plant areas are hard on dampers. Signs of corrosion or water are recorded so the cause can be tackled.
Looking after it afterwards
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Report leaks or condensation near ductwork quickly
- Do not let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Update the register when ductwork changes
The next test should be no more than a year away. The guidance is at least once a year, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Good access is half the battle. If a damper has no access panel, have one fitted before the next test.
Your questions about fire damper testing in Westbourne
Is fire damper testing any different in a coastal place like Westbourne?
It can. Salt air reaches Westbourne, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. If corrosion is stopping a blade, the report says so and remedial work can be quoted.
Can the work in Westbourne be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. It means the site in Westbourne keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Is a quote from photos possible?
Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
What does fire damper testing cost?
Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
Do we need to close while you work?
Normally not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.
What about areas you can’t get to?
They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
When to call us in Westbourne
The law puts a duty on the responsible person to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order. Employers, owners, landlords and managing agents all need evidence that the dampers have been checked.
What we are most often called out for:
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
- Dampers that stick or will not close fully
- Dust or grease build-up on damper blades
Healthcare buildings such as Havant War Memorial Hospital (about 2.8 miles west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.
Questions to ask before booking
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- Whether a written report and pictures are included
