What we are called out for in Stocker's Head
Buildings in Stocker's Head change owners, tenants and maintenance contractors over the years, and damper records often get lost along the way. With no register, it’s hard to say how many dampers exist, let alone when they were tested.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
- Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
A school like Charing Church of England Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.

About our fire damper testing in Stocker's Head
In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. That depends entirely on the blade closing all the way. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. If you have dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and smoke dampers with no recent test, we can help, from motorised smoke dampers, riser dampers and wall and floor dampers onwards.
For a building in or near Stocker's Head, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with pictures, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Why it’s worth doing now in Stocker's Head
A damper that is stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Stocker's Head rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
Why us?
- Work around your opening hours, with 24/7 emergency cover
- CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
- We diagnose before we treat
- Each visit written up, with photos
Between visits
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Diary the annual test well ahead
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
Pass the report to whoever keeps your fire risk assessment up to date, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Outstanding faults should be dealt with, not left on file.
Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that is just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.
When it’s something else
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
- Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Part by part
Ceiling voids and risers
Ceiling voids are where lots of dampers end up. We lift tiles where necessary and put them back as we found them.
Smoke dampers
Because they’re linked to controls, smoke damper tests can need some coordination. We agree the arrangements with you in advance.
FAQs for Stocker's Head
Can you work in Stocker's Head outside opening hours?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.
Do you do school damper testing in Stocker's Head in the summer holidays?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Stocker's Head. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
Will we get a certificate for the dampers?
After testing, we provide a report covering each damper, with its location, its result and any faults. It belongs in your fire safety log.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No, not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.
How long will damper testing take?
Expect it to take a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. How easily we can reach the dampers makes the most difference, and we’ll give you an idea when we quote.
How do you protect the area?
Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
What happens on the day
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Stocker's Head, let us know and we will plan around it.
- First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
- Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
- We release each fire damper blade and operate smoke dampers from their controls.
- Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
- The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.
Preparing for the visit
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
