Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in New Zealand
Smoke dampers work differently from fire dampers. A smoke damper is driven by a motor and responds to signals from its controls, so testing means running them through their controls and checking that each blade moves fully and returns. If you’re dealing with fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and rusted damper blades and springs, we can put it right, from offices and schools, riser dampers and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

FAQs for New Zealand
Can fire dampers in schools around New Zealand be tested in the holidays?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. The FSA’s register shows about 23 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of New Zealand. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for New Zealand?
Fire safety enforcement in New Zealand is handled by Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Are you accredited?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
Can you test out of hours?
Yes, the visit is arranged to suit the site. We can work evenings, overnight or at weekends if daytime testing would get in the way.
What types of premises do you cover?
Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.
Can you look after several sites?

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?
Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, who might be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. They must keep fire safety measures, including dampers, in working order.
Fire dampers in New Zealand buildings
Food Standards Agency records list about 23 schools, colleges and universities and about 34 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) registered as food businesses in New Zealand and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital is the nearest hospital, about under half a mile south of New Zealand. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital. The fire and rescue service for New Zealand is Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.
The nearest hospital, Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, is about under half a mile south; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. For managed buildings around Aylesbury station, damper testing can be booked out of hours so tenants are not disturbed.
New Zealand is about 1 mile west of Elmhurst, in Buckinghamshire. Across the HP19 area, we can take on fire damper testing. We cover 263 places across Buckinghamshire, large and small. Our Milton Keynes page covers sites nearby, about 15 miles away.
We work across HP19 and HP20 for fire damper testing and the streets around it. Local streets include Dunsham Lane, Drayton Road and Cannock Road, all of which we cover for fire damper testing. Nearby, we also carry out fire damper testing in Elmhurst (1 mile east), Aylesbury (1 mile south), Watermead (1 mile north-east), Quarrendon Estate (1 mile west) and California (1 mile south). Larger places within reach include High Wycombe (14 miles south), Chesham (12 miles south-east), Buckingham (14 miles north-west), Amersham (14 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (7 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

What we’re called out for in New Zealand
Other trades work around dampers all the time. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Dampers that stick or will not close fully
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
For schools like Elmhurst School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.
What to look for in a quote
- What records you’ll receive afterwards
- When the next visit should be, and why
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
Why it’s worth doing now in New Zealand
Your fire risk assessor or insurer may want evidence that dampers have been tested. A current report on file means you can answer straight away when the question comes. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
- Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
- Book the next test before the year runs out
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It means nothing gets forgotten when staff or contractors change.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
When it’s something else
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What happens on the day
At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to New Zealand run smoothly.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
Before we arrive
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Tell us where we can park and unload

Part by part
Smoke dampers
Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. We test them through their controls and check each blade travels fully.
Ceiling voids and risers
Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. Ceiling tiles are lifted for access and replaced afterwards.
