About our canopy cleaning in New Zealand

The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. If you are dealing with smoke hanging around the canopy during service and wet, greasy drips from the hood, we can help.

In a village or hamlet like New Zealand, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How we price canopy cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We take into account:

  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Any previous report or certificate

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Canopy cleaning in New Zealand: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 34 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central New Zealand. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Environmental health officers from Buckinghamshire council inspect food businesses in New Zealand. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service covers New Zealand. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Peter's or elsewhere in New Zealand, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. A kitchen near Aylesbury station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

New Zealand is about 1 mile west of Elmhurst, in Buckinghamshire. Sites in New Zealand get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with pictures. Our area takes in 263 places across Buckinghamshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. There’s also a page for Milton Keynes, roughly 15 miles from New Zealand.

Every address in HP19 and HP20 is covered for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. If you need canopy cleaning at premises on Dunsham Lane, Drayton Road and Cannock Road or anywhere close by, we can help. Close by, we work in Elmhurst (1 mile east), Aylesbury (1 mile south), Watermead (1 mile north-east), Quarrendon Estate (1 mile west) and California (1 mile south). We also work in nearby towns such as High Wycombe (14 miles south), Chesham (12 miles south-east), Buckingham (14 miles north-west), Amersham (14 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (7 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

Around New Zealand

Typical jobs here are in premises near The New Zealand pub, Buckinghamshire UTC and The PACE Centre and the streets around them. For rail, the closest station is Aylesbury station, roughly 0.8 miles south of the centre. A little further out are Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital (within half a mile south) and Dinton Castle (3.8 miles south-west).

How the job changes from site to site

Plenums and filter housings

The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Few pubs and hotels can shut the kitchen for a day. We clean the canopy overnight or between services so the kitchen keeps trading.

Multi-site and managed buildings

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.

Questions from New Zealand

Which environmental health team covers New Zealand?

That’s Buckinghamshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in New Zealand. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Can you work in New Zealand outside opening hours?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in New Zealand can fit around your hours. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What should I send you?

Some photos and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

Inside and out, including the seams, troughs and gutters. The plenum and filter housing behind the filters are cleaned too.

The process

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. For a village or hamlet like New Zealand, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Clear the space around the work

Why it’s worth doing now in New Zealand

In New Zealand, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after and keeping it that way is easier than catching up. Somewhere as small as New Zealand, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What you get with us

  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • Fully insured
  • Ventilation hygiene specialists since 2009
  • Each visit written up, with photos

What staff can safely do

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Common problems we fix in New Zealand

However carefully a kitchen in New Zealand is run, the canopy still collects grease. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

School kitchens, at schools like Elmhurst School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What your quote should include

  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Proof of insurance
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether a written report and photos are included
