Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Lee-on-the-Solent

BESA guidance is that fire dampers should be tested by a competent person when they’re installed and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need testing every year as a minimum. Our job is to do the testing and hand you the paperwork that shows it. The work covers fusible link fire dampers, wall and floor dampers and hospitals and care homes, and people most often call us about blades that jam part-way when released and dampers overdue for their annual drop test.

Around a place like Lee-on-the-Solent, dampers tend to be in schools, care homes, surgeries and hotels rather than big offices. The law on keeping them working doesn’t change with the size of the place.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Lee-on-the-Solent

Can you come to Lee-on-the-Solent after we close?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Lee-on-the-Solent keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.

Can you get to a site in Lee-on-the-Solent?

Yes. Lee-on-the-Solent is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

How often do fire dampers need drop testing?

BESA’s guidance is a test on installation and at least once a year after that. Your fire risk assessment may call for some dampers to be tested more often.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Every site has its own report.

What information do you need?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

How much does fire damper testing cost in Lee-on-the-Solent?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line, and we will advise on what to do next.

What happens to the waste?

We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it doesn’t spread.

What affects the quote in Lee-on-the-Solent

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • How big the system is
  • The condition of the system
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

Need a price for fire damper testing? Please phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

What a clean will not put right

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what fire damper testing will not do:

  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety
  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Offices and schools

What happens on the day

We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near Lee-on-the-Solent when you book.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

How to prepare

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know about parking and loading

How to get a quote

We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

What the work involves, part by part

Smoke dampers

A smoke damper is opened and closed by a motor, not a link. Testing means operating them from the controls to confirm the blade moves all the way.

Fusible link fire dampers

Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.

When to call us in Lee-on-the-Solent

Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either can stop the blade dropping fully.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Smoke dampers with no recent test
  • Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel
  • Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
  • Gaps in the fire damper test log

Healthcare buildings such as Gosport War Memorial Hospital (about 2.1 miles east) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

What your quote should include

  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • What insurance they carry
  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours

Our hiring checklist

Why deal with it now?

If a damper can’t close, the wall it sits in has a hole in it during a fire. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. It’s far better to find that out on a test than in a fire. A planned visit to Lee-on-the-Solent fits your hours; an emergency does not.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.
