Common questions in Kingston
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Kingston?
Kingston is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Can you come to Kingston after we close?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in Kingston can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.
How far ahead should we book?
Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
Where does the waste go?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
Are you fully insured?
Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.
About our fire damper testing in Kingston
The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Kingston and the rest of Portsmouth, keeping a log for each damper so there’s a history to look back on. The work covers hospitals and care homes, fusible link fire dampers and offices and schools, and people most often call us about dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and dirty dampers that may not close.
Buildings around Kingston may have just a handful of dampers, but each one still needs drop testing at least once a year, with the result recorded.
Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Kingston
Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Leave it or put it right?
When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. Damper test records are part of that answer, and they only exist if the testing happened. You choose the date of a planned visit, and a breakdown never asks.
One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.
Why us?
- Work around your opening hours, with 24/7 emergency cover

How it works
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. In a smaller place like Kingston, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.
- First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
- We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
- Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
- Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
- We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.
How to prepare
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Between visits
So the system stays in good health:
- Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Diary the annual test well ahead
- Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Rusted parts are one of the main reasons dampers fail to close.
Honest limits
To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- Deciding where dampers should be fitted
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.
What we work on in Kingston

- Riser dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Offices and schools
- Hospitals and care homes
What staff can safely do
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Signs you need fire damper testing in Kingston
Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either one can hold the blade part-open.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Dampers that stick or won’t close fully
- Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
If you manage offices, shops or flats near Fratton station, the ductwork in them may pass through fire-resisting walls and floors, and any dampers need testing at least once a year.
What your quote should include
- Whether the price is fixed
- When the next visit should be, and why
- What hours they’ll be on site
- What paperwork you get at the end
Fire damper testing in Kingston: local notes
Kingston lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Salt air speeds up corrosion, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing. There are about 40 schools, colleges and universities, about 44 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 7 hotels and B&Bs on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of central Kingston. If any of them has ducted ventilation, its dampers need an annual drop test at least. Kingston is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.
Hospitals such as St Mary's Hospital, about within half a mile south-east, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Kingston, the same annual testing applies. School buildings such as Miltoncross Academy are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.
