Fire damper testing in Hillhead
Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked for the dampers in your building. If you’re dealing with fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and dampers that stick or won’t close fully, we can put it right, from motorised smoke dampers, offices and schools and wall and floor dampers onwards.
Somewhere as small as Hillhead, fire dampers are typically found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Hillhead: your questions answered
Does the sea air around Hillhead make a difference to fire damper testing?
Yes, to a degree: at about 1 mile from the coast, Hillhead gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. We pay particular attention to dampers near louvres and intakes, where salt air reaches.
Do you work in villages like Hillhead?
Yes. Hillhead is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Who is the responsible person?
That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.
How long will damper testing take?
A visit takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Large buildings can be split over several visits, and you can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form to talk it through.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not typically. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.
What is TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Who is responsible for fire damper testing?
It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.
How the visit works
Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Hillhead and turn up when the site is quiet.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
How to prepare
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Clear the space around the work
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
How to get a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before work begins.
Advice
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Different parts, different methods
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Schools are often easiest to test during the holidays, when ceilings can be opened without disturbing lessons.
Offices and retail
Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.
Why act early in Hillhead
An untested damper is an unknown. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, and that’s something you can plan around. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Hillhead is calmer for everyone.
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who can’t easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
Aftercare tips
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
- Never wedge or tie a damper open
Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Good access is half the battle. If a damper has no access panel, have one fitted before the next test.
