Fire damper testing for sites in High Easter

Questions from High Easter

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in High Easter?

That’s Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.

Can you get to a site in High Easter?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and High Easter is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so you keep your normal hours.

Can you test motorised smoke dampers?

Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

It sits with the building’s responsible person. Depending on the building, that can be the employer, owner, landlord or whoever manages it. Our part is the testing and the records that show it’s been done.

What does fire damper testing cost?

We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before we start.

Can you quote from pictures?

Yes, where the pictures show enough. If not, a site survey comes first, and the quote follows that.

Fire damper testing in High Easter

For every damper, we record where it is, whether it passed and the state it’s in. Dampers that pass are reset and left open, ready to operate, and any that fail are listed with the reason. That record belongs with the building’s fire safety paperwork. If you have damper actions from a fire risk assessment and dampers affected by leaks or condensation, we can help.

For a building in or near High Easter, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

What we do, step by step

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Somewhere as small as High Easter, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Getting a quote

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll typically have a quote within one working day.

Advice

Different parts, different methods

Access panels

A damper can only be tested if it can be reached. That normally means an access panel in the duct, plus a way through the ceiling or wall.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

In schools and colleges, testing fits well into holidays and weekends, with no classes to work around.

Fire dampers in High Easter buildings

The fire and rescue service for High Easter is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. We cover High Easter, about 29 miles from central London, as part of our work across London and the South East. Evening, overnight and weekend visits are all possible.

The nearest hospital, Broomfield Hospital, is about 5.1 miles south-east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. Around High Easter, as anywhere, each damper is released, checked, reset and recorded.

High Easter is about 7 miles north-west of Chelmsford, in Essex. Across the CM1 area, we can take on fire damper testing. Our Essex coverage runs to 644 places, and High Easter is one of them. There’s also a page for Chelmsford, about 7 miles away.

All of CM1 is within our area for fire damper testing, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Streets in the area include The Street and Boreham Court, and we cover them all for fire damper testing. We also cover the places around High Easter: Stagden Cross (1 mile east), High Roding (2 miles north-west), Keeres Green (2 miles west), Roundbush Green (2 miles west) and Great Canfield (2 miles north-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Chelmsford (7 miles south-east), Braintree (10 miles north-east), Harlow (11 miles west), Brentwood (13 miles south), Maldon (15 miles east) and Billericay (13 miles south).

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Aftercare tips

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Book the next test before the year runs out
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file

If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that is just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What happens if it’s left?

When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. A damper test log helps show the responsible person kept on top of things, and you can only produce records for tests that took place. With notice, the visit to High Easter can be fitted around your bookings and events.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in High Easter

We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • The number of sites or systems
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • A single visit or a regular plan

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.
