Fire damper testing across Coscote

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Coscote

We are often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Coscote. If there’s a damper register or a set of drawings, share it with us, and we will plan the visit around the building’s hours. If you have smoke dampers with no recent test and dampers overdue for their annual drop test, we can put it right, from motorised smoke dampers, fusible link fire dampers and riser dampers onwards.

Somewhere as small as Coscote, fire dampers are typically found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What we’re called out for in Coscote

Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. If the duct carries cooking vapour, a film of grease adds to it, and either one can hold the blade part-open.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
  • Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
  • Dirty dampers that may not close
  • Fire dampers with no recent test record

If you manage a school site such as Hagbourne Church of England Primary School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Questions to ask before you book

Coscote questions

Do you work in villages like Coscote?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Coscote is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Which fire authority looks after Coscote?

It’s Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Coscote. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we have been trading since 2009.

How often should fire dampers be tested?

BESA guidance is that fire dampers are tested on completion of installation and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need annual testing as a minimum.

What about areas you can’t get to?

We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

How much notice do you need?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Can you test out of hours?

Yes, the visit is arranged to suit the site. We can work evenings, overnight or at weekends if daytime testing would get in the way.

What affects the quote in Coscote

We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

What to send for a quote

To speed up the quote, send us:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

Where there’s no access panel, we record the damper as not tested and say why. We can fit access panels so it’s tested next time.

Fusible link fire dampers

The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. The timing of a visit to Coscote is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
  2. We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.

How to prepare

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Why act early in Coscote

If a damper can’t close, the wall it sits in has a hole in it during a fire. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. Somewhere as small as Coscote, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
  • Update the register when ductwork changes

Pass the report to whoever keeps your fire risk assessment up to date, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.

Make sure every damper can be reached. Where there’s no hatch, an access panel makes testing possible before the next test.
