Fire damper testing across Churchill

Churchill buildings and fire safety

Churchill is covered by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.

For schools like Kingham Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.

Fire damper testing in Churchill, done properly

Responsible persons, facilities managers and managing agents call us when damper testing falls due in Churchill. If there’s a damper register or a set of drawings, share it with us, and we will plan the visit around the building’s hours. The work covers offices and schools, wall and floor dampers and hospitals and care homes, and the jobs we see most are fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and missing or out-of-date damper records.

Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What happens on the day

Your staff do not need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Churchill before we set off.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Churchill questions

Can you work in Churchill outside opening hours?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Churchill doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Can you get to a site in Churchill?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Churchill is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What if a fire damper will not close?

It’s listed on the report as a fault and we quote for remedials. Once fixed, the damper is drop tested again and the record updated.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Who is responsible for fire damper testing?

It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Testing at least yearly and keeping the reports is how they can show it’s being done.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

We test, record and report, rather than certify dampers to a standard. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

Do you need fire damper testing in Churchill?

Other trades work around dampers all the time. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Dust or grease build-up on damper blades
  • Damper actions from a fire risk assessment
  • Dampers that stick or won’t close fully
  • Dampers affected by leaks or condensation

Historic houses near Churchill, with Chastleton House about 3.8 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings can hold dampers in unexpected places.

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Honest limits

Fire damper testing cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Approving the building’s fire strategy
  • Designing the building’s fire compartments

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Where we work

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Offices and schools

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

What the work involves, part by part

Offices and retail

In shared buildings, some dampers sit inside tenants’ space. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.

Smoke dampers

If a smoke damper will not operate when signalled, it goes on the report as a failure, along with what we saw.

What affects the quote in Churchill

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The size of the system
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

Helping us quote

You don’t need the technical terms. Just send:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • A few general shots of the system
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The postcode and the type of business

To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade

If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. Faults caught early are easier to fix.
