Canopy cleaning in Churchill, done properly
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers baffle filters, island canopies and grease gutters, and people most often call us about wet, greasy drips from the hood and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Looking after it afterwards
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Keep the fan on through service
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
- Check all filters are fitted before service
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
FAQs for Churchill
Which fire service covers Churchill?
Churchill is in the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Churchill out of term?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 2 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Churchill. You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.
Do you provide photos of the cleaned canopy?
A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. The report includes a recommended next clean date.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.
What do you do with what you remove?
We take it away when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.
Are the filters cleaned too?
They’re taken out, cleaned and refitted. We check each one seats properly, because gaps let grease through.
How long is a canopy clean?
One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We will tell you what to expect.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.
Canopy cleaning in Churchill: the local picture
Look up Churchill on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Churchill. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Churchill sits within the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in Churchill are the job of West Oxfordshire council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Historic houses near Churchill, such as Chastleton House about 3.8 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. Where a hall near Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Churchill, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Why it’s worth doing now in Churchill
Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Churchill rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before any work starts.

How the visit works
Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. The timing of a visit to Churchill is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Other services in Churchill
Part by part
Grease troughs and gutters
Some troughs drain to a cup or drawer, that is emptied and cleaned too, and we’ll show staff where it is.
School and staff canteen kitchens
In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.
When to call us in Churchill
Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, so the plenum often carries months of grease.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Grease filters blocking between washes
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Kingham Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
