Fire damper testing in Charvil, Wokingham
We cover Charvil for fire damper testing. Out-of-hours visits, a fixed quote and a written report with pictures on every job.
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
- Dampers clogged with dust or grease
How we handle fire damper testing in Charvil
The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. Where a blade sticks, a link is damaged or corrosion has set in, we note it and can quote to repair or replace the damper, so the fault doesn’t just sit on a list. The work covers riser dampers, offices and schools and fusible link fire dampers, and people most often call us about dampers overdue for their annual drop test and dust or grease build-up on damper blades.
Where there are care homes, schools or hotels around a place like Charvil, their dampers are often in the ductwork serving kitchens, plant rooms and corridors. We plan the work around the people using the building.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Charvil buildings and fire safety
The FSA’s food hygiene register lists about 6 schools, colleges and universities and about 14 care, childcare and hospital premises with registered kitchens or food service across Charvil and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. Royal Berkshire Hospital is the nearest hospital, about 3.7 miles south-west of Charvil. Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who cannot easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Charvil. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.
If you look after a building near Twyford station with a fire risk assessment due, a damper test with a full record is worth having first. School buildings such as Waingels College are typically tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers. If you manage a care home or clinic near Charvil, the testing that a hospital like Royal Berkshire Hospital (about 3.7 miles south-west) relies on applies to your dampers too.

How the visit works
Your staff don’t need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. A site near Charvil typically has room to park, so the questions are about access to the system and your hours.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Find the previous report, if there is one
How to get a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

How we price fire damper testing
Your quote is based on your site. We consider:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- The times the site is available
- The condition we find in the survey
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
What to send for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Any previous report or certificate
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Charvil: your questions answered
Do you work overnight in Charvil?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Charvil does not have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Which fire authority looks after Charvil?
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Charvil. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
Do you certify fire dampers?
What you receive is a written report of each test for every damper on the visit. Failures are set out with the remedials we’d suggest.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.
Who is responsible for fire damper testing?
The duty falls on the responsible person for the premises. Depending on the building, that can be the employer, owner, landlord or whoever manages it. Our part is the testing and the records that show it’s been done.
Do you test smoke dampers as well?
Yes. Every smoke damper is driven through its controls and checked for full movement. Where a controls contractor needs to be involved, we arrange it with you.
Honest limits
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:
- Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
- Approving the building’s fire strategy
- Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Wall and floor dampers
- Riser dampers
- Offices and schools
How the job changes from site to site
Fusible link fire dampers
The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Hospitals and care homes stay occupied around the clock. The sequence of testing is agreed with staff to keep disruption to a minimum.
Aftercare tips
So the system stays in good health:
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Diary the annual test well ahead
- File every damper report where your assessor can find it
- Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
The next test should be no more than a year away. The guidance is at least once a year, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
