Fire damper testing in Aston, done properly

Some dampers haven’t been tested since the day they went in. Ceilings get lowered, hatches get boarded over and paperwork goes astray. We find what we can, test what we can reach and list anything we can’t get to, so you can see exactly what still needs access. The work covers hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and offices and schools, and the jobs we see most are fire dampers nobody can get to and motorised smoke dampers due for testing.

Testing in a small place like Aston is planned around the journey and access, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • What state the system is in
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • The number of sites or systems

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What we need to know

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room

For fire damper testing in Aston, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send photos or your last report if you can. A fixed quote usually follows within one working day.

How the visit works

Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, carry out the fire damper testing, tidy up and leave you the report. The visit itself takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Aston before we set off.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Ask for a quote

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Aston: your questions answered

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Aston?

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Aston. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.

Do you work in villages like Aston?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Aston included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

After testing, we provide a report covering each damper, with its location, its result and any faults. Keep it with your fire safety records.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

What happens to dampers you cannot get to?

We record it as not tested and explain why. We can fit an access panel so it’s tested on the next visit.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.

What is TR19?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

How much notice should we give?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

What a clean won’t put right

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • Riser dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers

Why deal with it now?

If a damper can’t close, the wall it sits in has a hole in it during a fire. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

What fire damper testing looks like in Aston

Aston is covered by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises. We cover Aston, about 34 miles from central London, as part of our work across London and the South East. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site.

If you manage a historic building in the area (Greenlands is about 1 mile north-west), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.

Aston is about 2 miles north-east of Henley-on-Thames, in Oxfordshire. We carry out fire damper testing for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Aston and the rest of Oxfordshire. Aston is one of 443 places in Oxfordshire where we work for fire damper testing. Reading is in our area too, around 8 miles away.

All of RG9 is covered for fire damper testing, from the main roads to the quietest streets. That includes premises on Remenham Lane and Aston Ferry Lane and the roads around them. Neighbouring places we cover for fire damper testing include Mill End (1 mile north), Remenham Hill (1 mile south), Remenham (1 mile west), Medmenham (1 mile east) and Bockmer End (2 miles east). Within a short drive, we also cover Thame (14 miles north), Benson (11 miles north-west), Chinnor (10 miles north), Tilehurst (9 miles south-west), Wallingford (12 miles west) and Little Heath (10 miles south-west).

Landmarks near Aston

We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Flower Pot Hotel and Fawley Court and Temple Island, among other places. The nearest railway station is Henley-On-Thames station, roughly 1.7 miles south-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Marlow Community Hospital (4.6 miles east) and Frazer Nash Archives (1.9 miles south-west). For a walk, there’s Weycock Hill and Hurley Chalk Pit.

When to call us in Aston

Rust is a frequent reason a damper will not close. Water leaks, condensation and damp plant areas attack the casing, blade and spring, and the damper can seize quietly where no one sees it.

What we’re most often called out for:

  • Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
  • Dampers that stick or won’t close fully
  • Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
  • Gaps in the fire damper test log

Healthcare buildings such as Marlow Community Hospital (about 4.6 miles east) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether the figure could change on the day

Access panels

Over time, hatches and panels get covered up. Clear access makes the test quicker and less disruptive.

Offices and retail

Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. Access to each area is planned with whoever manages the building.
