Fire damper testing across Abshot

What the work involves, part by part

Smoke dampers

A smoke damper that does not respond to its controls is recorded as a fault, along with what we saw.

Offices and retail

Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. Access to each area is planned with whoever manages the building.

How we handle fire damper testing in Abshot

Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. Drop testing proves that this still happens, and we record the result for every damper we test. The work covers hospitals and care homes, motorised smoke dampers and riser dampers, and people most often call us about fire dampers nobody can get to and dirty dampers that may not close.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

When it’s something else

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Designing the building’s fire compartments
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes

What happens if it’s left?

If a damper cannot close, the wall it sits in has a hole in it during a fire. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. It’s far better to find that out on a test than in a fire. A fault that closes a site in a village like Abshot affects everyone who depends on it.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What we do, step by step

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Abshot run smoothly.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
  3. We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Clear loose items from the work area

How to get a quote

Advice

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
  • Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
  • Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable

Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. The guidance is at least once a year, so it helps to book it before the date slips.

Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Abshot

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

Abshot questions

Can a school’s dampers in Abshot be tested out of term time?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Food Standards Agency records list about 4 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Abshot. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Abshot?

Fire safety enforcement in Abshot is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Do you work in Abshot?

Yes. We work in Abshot and across Hampshire, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Who is responsible for fire damper testing?

It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Testing at least yearly and keeping the reports is how they can show it’s being done.

How often should fire dampers be tested?

According to BESA guidance, dampers should be tested when they’re installed and then at least once a year. For spring-operated dampers, once a year is the minimum.

Fire dampers in Abshot buildings

The coast is only about 1 mile from Abshot. Dampers close to louvres and air intakes can corrode in sea air, and a corroded blade may not drop. Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 4 schools, colleges and universities and about 13 care, childcare and hospital premises serving food within about 1.5 miles of central Abshot. Schools, care settings and hotels are the kind of buildings where fire dampers are commonly found. About 1.7 miles north of Abshot is Fareham Community Hospital, the nearest hospital. A hospital is the kind of building where dampers sit on every floor, and clinics, surgeries and care homes need the same annual testing for any they have.

The nearest hospital, Fareham Community Hospital, is about 1.7 miles north; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. School buildings such as Locks Heath Infant School are typically tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.

Abshot is about 3 miles west of Fareham, in Hampshire. We carry out fire damper testing for commercial premises of every kind in Abshot and the rest of Hampshire. We cover 683 places across Hampshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. We also work in Southampton, about 7 miles from Abshot.
