Extract fan cleaning in Northiam, done properly
Every kitchen extract depends on its fan: it draws the air through the canopy and ductwork and pushes it outside. Grease that gets past everything else ends up on its blades and housing and we clean it off. We’re often asked to deal with an extract fan that vibrates or rattles and burning smells from the fan area, on in-line fans, fan housings and axial fans.
Work in a small place like Northiam starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes an hour or two for most single fans. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Northiam before we set off.
- First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
- The fan is isolated so it can’t start while we work.
- Grease is scraped from the impeller blades and the inside of the housing.
- Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
- We reassemble, run the fan and photograph the result.
Before we arrive
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Clear the space around the work
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Getting a quote
To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Why deal with it now?
A greasy fan at the discharge can spread grease onto the roof or wall around it. It marks the area around the outlet and leaves more fuel outside, which is one more reason to keep it clean. If the system at a site near Northiam fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What extract fan cleaning can’t fix
To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:
- Electrical faults in the fan’s supply or controls (an electrician’s job)
- An undersized fan that cannot cope
- A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.
What the work covers
- Roof-mounted fans
- Fan housings
- In-line fans
- Discharge points
- Axial fans
- Centrifugal fans
Looking after it afterwards
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Keep the fan on whenever the range is lit
- Tell us if the extract feels weaker
- Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
If the fan needs more than a clean, we’ll say so plainly. Fan repair and replacement are services we offer too, so you have one point of contact.
Fewer grease particles reaching the fan means less build-up. Clean, well-seated filters are the fan’s first protection, and replace any that are damaged.
How we price extract fan cleaning
Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The scale of the work
- Travel, parking and unloading
Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- The postcode and the type of business
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
Quotes are quick. Send a few details and photos, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Your questions about extract fan cleaning in Northiam
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Northiam?
Kitchens in Northiam are inspected by Rother council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Do you work in villages like Northiam?
Yes, Northiam is part of our area, however small the site. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
How long is a fan clean?
A single accessible fan does not take long, but hard-to-reach fans take more time. We plan it out of hours.
How often does the fan need cleaning?
At least as often as the rest of the extract, which BESA guidance sets by daily cooking hours: from 3-monthly for heavy use to 12-monthly for light use. A noisy or heavily coated fan may need it sooner.
What should I send you?
Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
What we are called out for in Northiam
Grease condenses as the air cools, and a fan out on a roof or wall often sits where the air is coolest. So grease often settles heavily there.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Less air being pulled from the kitchen
- A fan that has never been cleaned
- An extract fan that vibrates or rattles
- A motor area thick with grease
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Northiam Church of England Primary School or anywhere near Northiam, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.
