Extract fan cleaning in Hawthorn

How we handle extract fan cleaning in Hawthorn

Every kitchen extract depends on its fan: it draws the air through the canopy and ductwork and pushes it outside. Whatever grease slips past the filters and duct reaches the fan, and that’s what we clean. We’re often asked to deal with grease escaping from the fan outlet and a heavily greased fan housing, on axial fans, in-line fans and fan housings.

In a village or hamlet like Hawthorn, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Part by part

Impellers and blades

The impeller is the spinning part that moves the air, and it collects grease unevenly. An uneven coating throws it off balance, so it’s cleaned carefully blade by blade.

Roof-mounted fans

On a roof, the air is cooler and grease drops out faster. The impeller and housing are scraped and degreased.

How the visit works

Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the extract fan cleaning, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Hawthorn and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. Each blade is cleaned so the impeller runs evenly.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Getting a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Advice

Hawthorn: your questions answered

Can the work in Hawthorn be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Hawthorn keeps running as normal. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Is extract fan cleaning any different in a coastal place like Hawthorn?

It can. Being within about 2 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Hawthorn than inland. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We usually quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

Is it safe to clean the fan while the kitchen is open?

It has to be off and isolated before anyone touches it. Cleans are done when the kitchen is closed, so cooking is not affected.

Are you accredited?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.

What paperwork do I get after a fan clean?

Photos, notes on condition and a recommended next date. Keep it with your maintenance log.

What affects the quote in Hawthorn

We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • The scale of the work
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The times the site is available

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The site address and the type of premises

For extract fan cleaning in Hawthorn, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. A fixed quote normally follows within one working day.

What a clean won’t put right

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • A failed motor or worn bearings (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
  • An undersized fan that can’t cope

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Fan housings
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • In-line fans
  • Discharge points
  • Axial fans
  • Centrifugal fans

Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Tell us if the extract feels weaker
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Keep each photo report with the maintenance log

You get before and after photos of the impeller and housing. It lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, along with the recommended next clean date.

The fan stays cleaner when less grease gets past the canopy. Keep the grease filters clean, fitted and in place, and replace any that are damaged.

What happens if it’s left?

An unbalanced fan gets worse, not better. It wears bearings and mounts and can lead to a breakdown and a kitchen can’t cook safely without extraction. A planned clean beats an emergency. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

What extract fan cleaning looks like in Hawthorn

Hawthorn lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The Food Standards Agency lists about 3 pubs and bars as registered food businesses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Hawthorn. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Fire safety in Hawthorn falls to Kent Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

School kitchens, at schools like Reculver Church of England Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in Hawthorn, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
